have you ever wondered where all the old stuff goes?

it seems that it vanishes from the face of the earth.

example:

when the i7 920 D0 came out people started selling their C0's right?

well not exactly. i saw plenty up for sale but not half the ones i know are out in the wild.

where are the C0s now? i see 1 up for sale every now and then but thats it.

wheres the rest of them? where they thrown away???

same with mobos.... where did all the evga 680i boards go that EVERYONE used to have? trashed?

wheres all the 2k and 3k ati cards? 7k and 8k nvidia cards? no one seems to own them anymore.

do you realize 100's of thousands of these products where made and they are all gone now. disa-fucking-peered from the face of the earth.

in the landfill you say?

i think not.

SOMEONE is HORDING this shit in a HUGE MASSIVE pile SOMEWHERE.

i've asked a few companies that make this crap and they all say they never see it again unless its RMAed in which they recycle it and send out a new one from B-stock OR something new thats equivalent.

what do you think?

I think thinks like 680i boards are slowly being recycled at this point, but I would be startled if people weren't using C0 i7s. I would take an i7 C0 over my Q9400 any day
Hardware that is older, slower, more outdated or less desirable is probably recycled, such as Geforce 6 and 7 cards.

this probably should be moved to general nonsense, but i'm rather curious as to what answers people come up with.

my answers:

1. Second hand trades/sales
2. Dead hardware RMA'd/binned
3. still in systems, not everyone is an upgrade whore

For every new part I have, I have five old parts (e.g. Core i7 920: Opteron 180, Athlon 64 4000+, 2 x Xeon 5310, Pentium 2 333 MHz, AMD Athlon 700 MHz, Pentium M 1.5 GHz, Core 2 Duo P9300). That's common across the globe. Computers that were new in 1998 are getting shipped to 3rd world countries like Haiti. There's always someone, somewhere, that can use a still functioning part.

A lot of older things get donated to goodwill, churches, schools etc. Every once in a while you see someone with an old rig like my pentium 3. People sell huge lots of old parts for like $25 on ebay.

I know my school has a bunch of computers and old CRT monitors piled up in one of the hallways by an exit. They're probably socket 478 or socket A... if only I had the power to set them all crunching...

I sell my hardware at very discounted rates to friends and family, then write it off, and use a high deduction schedule on my new hardware purchases. My last system went for $500 with a windows licanse. This GPU is going to go for $100 with a good air cooler, actually going in my old system, and I will buy back the 3870 from him for $20 and sell it for $40 to another build.

My 4000+ went to a porn-photographer friend in Cali. I should ahve asked for a invite to the mansion instead of money.

It gets around.

dead hardware makes up a lot of it.

the athlon XP to P4 (478) generation mostly are dead motherboards due to the chinese capacitor problems over the years. i've got lots of old CPU's with no home ,due to the motherboards dying long before anything else

The sad thing is some of this stuff destined for recycling actually ends up dumped on the coasts of 3rd world countries.
Literally, container ships just dump this stuff on the coast somewhere in Africa, a pile of tech crap leaching heavy metals and poisons into their environment and people collecting it.

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/w...-africa-britain8217s-toxic-waste-1624869.html

There are heaps of articles like this if you google "electronic waste dumped in Africa".

The article refers to dozens of shipping containers per day.

I want to know what happens to "old" hardware at banks, hospitals and so on.. Also those computers that are just there to display information, like in train stations.

They are probably still being used. OS/2 still has a large market share in ATM machines, if I recall. Look it up.

In all seriousness I volunteer at a recycling center just about every week. It's rare to see a lot of computer components, and most of them are picked up by regular folk to be re-used in the home/home office.

At least someone knows a little, but the main place is in Ghana, despite it happening all over Africa.:shadedshu
It breaks my heart to see you guys laughing about this, not knowing how people are being tortured here in Africa by the sicknesses they get from this stuff that the gready gvts make a deal to make money for themselves in exchange for having it dumped on the populace.
