Probably the graphics card, but I would say get a decent monitor before you do that...

thanks. I know i need a new monitor i was thinking about that myself but i want a good GPU first so when i upgrade i can still max things out... So what graphics card would you recommend?(ATI or nvidia doesn't matter)

i would get an Asus M4A79 Deluxe (DDR2 as u have AM2 CPU). Altough as Caboose said, a videocard is not a bad idea. If u get a videocard i suggest a 5770 or a 4890.

As a gamer, i would definitely upgrade the video card. Can make a hell of a difference.(i came from a 8600 GTS to a 4870, huge difference)

Also as said, i would get a better monitor.

Everything else looks pretty decent, maybe think about getting a quad core to.

i'm thinking pickup a quad or tri now then later 2 5770's. I think that would be a kick ass upgrade.but i know for sure i won't see a big difference going from my highly clocked 8800GT like CD did going from the 8600GTS to the 4870

Monitor would be first. There is no point in upgrading the graphic card if you are gaming on a 17" monitor!
After you change the monitor you can go for a better VGA or maybe a quad CPU.

Now that I have my 22" LCD, I can't settle for anything smaller, so my first choice would probably be a new LCD. However, if you are decently happy with your current monitor, I would buy this:
Athlon II X4 620
GTS 250

(Yes, I know, this is slightly above your budget, but not much)
The plan is the new CPU would be better for WCG, and the 250 would be for games/F@H (to replace the 3870, keep the 8800GT)

Is anyone considering the fact that the 3870 is probably maxing out that 5000+ as it is? anything beefier will be bottleknecked to hell and back, id go for a new motherboard / processor (maybe a phenom?) and then upgrade the GPU down the line some where.

Don't upgrade your graphics unless you go GTX260 or above. Paired with your current monitor you should be gaming for a little while longer. But with that said, you will then see bottlenecking @ 1280x1024. All depends on how much you game.

Although if you upgrade your cpu, you won't have enough to upgrade your LCD display. There really isn't that many LCD's in the sub $125 region that are better than your current CRT.

personally, I'd upgrade the CPU. I'm partial to the Phenom II 940 but I hear there's good sucess in unlocking the 720 with the TA790GX 128M


For those suggesting a MB upgrade, he doesn"t need it only a 790FX board is "better" and he'd only need that if he plans to go Quadfire anytime soon.

Just make sure you have a heatsiink on the MOSFETs and the TA790GX will handle anything you throw at it

I'm not using the 3870 for gaming i am using a 8800GT@630/1915/1000(C/S/M) the 3870 is just there for folding and to run hulu on the 2nd monitor while i game

an 8800 is a decent card albeit an older generation. that HDD though whoa!! If you want faster boot and game load times on a budget I would recommend a WD 640GB Black HDD.

After that a 22 or 24" cheapy TN lcd. For games you can always turn down settings to boost fps. A grfx card dont do much for the desktop, but the monitor is always being used all the time.

could be. with a bios upgrade it will take any am3 cpu. for cheap get atlon x3 or x4 or if u can afford better a phenom ii 720

i got offered a x3 720 just waiting for a reply on price. I am consiering a 620 x4 or a 425 X3 and maybe get lucky and unlock the 4th core

The x3 720 is a great chip, I put one in my friends system, first AMD chip I got to really play with in quite awhile, I was pretty pleased.

I would as well say CPU, then go for graphics and monitor depending on which is more important to you.
