id's Rage Unlikely to Use Dedicated Servers

While id is still deciding exactly what the multiplayer component of Rage will entail, the studio has said that the shooter is unlikely to support dedicated servers on PC.

"It's not cast in stone yet, but at this point no, we don't think we will have dedicated servers," id technical director John Carmack told Variety's The Cut Scene before noting "things are cooking along well" for the PC, Mac, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 title.

Infinity Ward recently revealed that its anticipated shooter Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 would not support dedicated servers, a decision met with vocal opposition.

"The great thing is we won't have to be a pioneer on that," explained Carmack. "We'll see how it works out for everyone else." An online petition opposing Infinty Ward's decision has surpassed 185,000 signatures, with the studio arguing that the new matchmaking system will provide more players with a better experience.

Lower player count, worse latency and the fate of mod support are among the various topics that have fans up in arms over Modern Warfare 2's lack of dedicated servers.

And while id has yet to say much on the topic of Rage's multiplayer component other than admitting it's a work-in-progress, CEO Todd Hollenhead recently suggested that the traditional inclusion of mod support was likely, but represented "something we may [have] to sit down and have a discussion with [id owner] ZeniMax about."

Somehow, I get the feeling that Activision has pressured ID into this (considering Activision now owns ID Software) . . .

This strikes me as assinine - ID's biggest success has been with MP in the PC community . . . I can clearly recall 32-64 player matches on Quake, Quake2, Quake3 . . . that is what made the MP so much fun, the absolute free-for-all.

If ID completely ditch dedicated servers - I forsee a chain reaction from the PC dev community . . .

wow this is just getting ridiculous and it needs to stop right now. I dont understand why anyone in there right mind would not want to support dedicated servers. Its not like they have to pay for the servers.

Activision doesn't own Id, Zenimax (parent company to Bethesda) does.
In any event, my suggestion is that MailMan relax and see what happens. It's still pretty early in the game.
Zenimax is not a stupid company and gives almost free reign to their developers. If they are not going to support dedicated servers, then no one has made a good enough case for them from a financial perspective.
Things are touch and go for everyone in a very shakey financial markets all over the world.
You can't keep a company running on losing assets no matter how much the public wants them.
How would you feel about paying to access the dedicated servers ? ... I didn't thing so.

Just my 2 cents.

I have to agree with you here. Everything costs money. The dedicated servers are not free, and do affect the bottom line. They can always add dedicated servers later, if and when it makes financial sense to do so.

Carmack is basically saying
"We're going to wait and see how much money they make on COD3.6 and if they do just fine we won't bother putting in dedicated servers. I'd rather make tons of money then put in extra work to put in dedicated servers only to result in similar profits. I'm sure glad we don't have to be the pioneer on this one, I'm glad someone finally stuck the middle finger in the air aimed at Pc players. Now we can truly know if PC players will still fork over their cash for the same watered-down-console-bullshit cranked out for the mainstream "couch and TV gamer"."

I bet all these server hosting companies are going bananas.. imagine all the revenue those companies will be missing out on if most next gen games opt of od ded server features?

Do you realize how many CS dod CS:S dod:s etc players paid for monthly dedicated servers?

Why must everyone cut corners these days and only think of themselves. Something so simple as dedicated servers will cost US business millions of dollars. Americans do not rent servers from overseas. This is about as dumb as banning internet poker for americans, those sites make millions a day (tons of cash went overseas starting 4 years ago during the birth of our economic downfall so this could have been 5-10% of the probelm too) and all that money goes across the pond. imagine the tax money USA could be getting off something that can be controlled so easily.

I'd lilke to find an article from server hosting ceos' about this.

This is Carmack we're talking about. He has not failed us before. (Especially me, since I really enjoyed Orcs and Elves on the DS.)

I don't like the trend.

Anyway Rage has never looked MP oriented at all to me. In fact I thought it would have none or something very trivial like Doom3. Maybe it just has coop and 1 vs 1, 2 vs 2 or something like that. Couldn't it be possible? Just asking.

Well if the game just has co-op, duel, or paired games, then dedicated servers would be useless.

this is true. It's impossible to compare this game to MW.

It will be like playing GRID I think, only different of course.

IDK - what throws me off is that all of ID's major titles since Quake have had a very MP oriented design . . . sure, there's SP and all, but the weapon/movement balance was always more geared in a different direction . . .

Hell, Quake3 was literally designed around MP, and had SP tacked in later.

Even Doom3 (which kinda came across more SP oriented), which had a decent SP - but anyone who's played the MP can tell you the MP is much better - the maps are brilliantly designed and gameplay dynamics are superb.

The only "backwards" step ID has taken over the years was to reduce the number of players their games support - IIRC, Quake2 at one point supported more than 48, Quake3 supported up to 32. Doom3 supported 16-24 . . . but, that's kinda pointless, too, as they tend to patch in more player support later on as well.

I just can't imagine ID doing something so backwards for the PC community . . . their primary developmental market has been the PC . . .

This is not a DS game we're talking about. It's a game on PC that many people pay alot of money to have nice systems to play it on, it's one of the first DX11 titles and its ID for god sake. Id is the grandaddy of 1st person shooters and employing the use of dedicated servers am I wrong?

But this game isnt just a fps, its racing too I beleive.. so if the number of players per game is very low then like they said, dedicated servers aren't really needed.

They've supported dedicated servers since at least as far back as Quake . . . I truly can't remember, though, if DoomII did or not . . .

So the only solution for us now is to make sure PC gamers don't buy games with no deticated server less we want this to become a standard.

They really know how to bring out someones inner nerd rage!

I wouldn't sweat it. MW2 is going to be the pioneer of "don't ever underestimate the value of dedicated server support"

I don't really think infinity ward cares what PC gamers think anymore, they seem to be trying to show all game developers that only profit matters.

I don't know how the game is in reality, I just had the impression it would be more like that. Them saying the control would be more console oriented had a lot to do too. It's sad (very very sad) but it seems like they went to the dark side too. Maybe not completely yet but... I hope not seriously.

How do third party servers cost the developers money? No they wont support dedicated servers simply for the fact they want to charge for DLC and such.

The way I read his (Carmak's) statements, is that Id (or the producers, which would be Zenimax) are not planning on supplying dedicated servers. Servers cost money, lots of money. There is the server lease fees, the bandwidth fee, the support costs (maintaining the software), the technical support costs (handling user problems), the employee wages and benefits, etc. etc.

The DLC's are not an issue, as even with dedicated servers they could work out a business model to make money from that too.

The reason everyone is trying to cut corners these days is simply because the revenue is drying up. The competition is fierce for every online player's dollar. People are holding on to their money because they simply do not have the discretionary income that they used to, and many are not sure if they will even have a job a year from now.

The companies MUST recoup all of their design and production costs and then make a decent profit to even stay in business and begin the next project. Why do you think you hear of so many studio closures in the last 6 months? It's not greed, it's business survival. Look at how many studios secured millions in investment dollars and still went belly up.

Money is not the only thing, but without it a company stops being a company and simply becomes a liability to the shareholders (if publically traded) or the owners. It is far better to take a little scorn from the public and remain a viable entity, so that in the future if/when the economy recovers you can continue where you left off.

As always, just my opinion. :toast:

:toast:

He said nothing about SUPPLYING the servers. Hes talking about not SUPPORTING the server community. EA had like maybe 10 dedicated servers online for BF2 and I never played on one. Everything was played on third party servers. If it wasn't for DICEs support of the dedicated server community BF2 would have been a complete failure.

As for all the sudios going belly up I have yet to hear a "AAA" studio go under. Everything thats gone down has been "B" class at best.

Buying an iD game for the single player is like getting a hooker for the conversation.

lol

Trust me, i would have never bought Doom(any of them) because of the multiplayer. The majority of games they make i consider mainly singleplayer.

The Quake series is the only ID games i have bought for the multiplayer.
