so i think i have decided to stay with the intel 775 socket due to the i5 $$ per performance factor and the i7 is just too expensive.

case: HAF 932 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811119160
Mobo: p5E3 pro http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131600
GPU: keepingg my single HD 4890 and crossfire with a second http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102852

RAM: for now 2x2gb hopefully soon 4x2gb http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148329

HD: samsung F3 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822152185

keeping everything else in my current rig until i can afford Q9550 or i7 swap questions comment concerns?

with that $660 you could go i5 and still have some toy moneys left over.

but will, say, a 750 offer much improvement over his 8400? :ohwell:

this was exactly my thoughts as well, with the new case i can OC my cpu a bit more since i have more airflow hopefully cooler temps. ive seen the i5 scores and the e8500 is on par with an i5 fps wise so an OC'd 8400 should have no problem surpassing the i5, if i had the money to shell out id go i7 but considering the chip is approx 300 and a good board 150-200 plus id need to upgrade PSU it would really raise the bar on the budget

So you're going to dump 135$ on a last gen mobo then put in another 110$ for ddr3 ram and not gain more than previously because you have to on that board. Just so you can add another graphics card? Why not sell the current parts, cpu, mobo, ram and upgrade now to i5?

Huge improvement. Core for core, meaning single core benchmarks/programs (games), the i5/i7 processors are seeing a 20% increase in performance at equal clocks to their 775 predecessors. Also reaching 4.0GHz is much easier. Clock for clock and voltage they run cooler than 775. It's just all better. Much better.

Why would you need to upgrade the PSU? Don't you have an OCZ 600w?

Anyway, I've told you before that you should just scrap your 775 and go 1156 or 1366. A Core i7 920 is a mere $30 more than a Q9550. Also, if you upgrade your video card, maybe go with a 5850 or 5870 so you don't have to deal with more products that are going to reach EOL status.

So you're going to dump 245$ on a last gen mobo just so you can add another graphics card?

Why not?, i have a old 680i SLI mobo with a 4870 sitting on it, runs great in games. I recently upgrading my HDD to a Velociraptor and installed Windows 7 and couldn't be happier.:)

i5 isn't offering much at all for people who have a nicely clocked C2D or C2Q. Now video editing and CAD work is a different story.(you should see some significant improvement going with i5)

Just depends on you and the programs/apps you run.

i have yet to see any charts that prove this point, most of the fps charts non benchmark scores the core 2 duo and the i5 quads are very similar, the Q9550 actually out performs the i5 in most cases, how ever the i7 seems to trump all

Just depends on you really.

But you didn't take anything out and replace it with last gen stuff using $$$ to do it. All you did was add something that didn't require a new mobo and ram. Moocow is essentially 2/3 of the way from replacing a setup, the remaining 1/3 would be the cpu.

go to the overclocking and cooling section of the forums? There's also no way in hell a Q9550 beats an i5 750.

yes been to the overclocking section they are intrested in benchmark scores from 3dmark im intrested in real time performance, i wont be running any benchmarking, the games i run may or may not have multi-thread capability, just put together an i7 build and its over $1000 without shipping over $400 more.

using same HD vid card and ram from above just added the cost of the i7, mobo, and a new heat sink.

i7 920 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115202 $300
case and mobo combo http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.285272 $354

cpu cooler http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835233029 $50

with vid card HDD, and ram totals $1,079 vs my $600 for cross fire, new hdd, ddr3 ram, if i wait it out till after the first of the year i could maybe do the i7 build but i doubt it $1,000 is a lot of money in my budget right now

i7920s from microcenter are 199.99. i5 750s are 149.99 at microcenter... 1156 is dirt cheap for motherboards.

Bugger the new case!

Grab a WC loop ( second hand you could get for about 150 that's with a tripple rad) sell your 4890 and get a 5850/70.

You'll be set for quite a while that way.

ill check into that but i need a hand finding a good board to go with the i7 build so i can compare side by side, also i forgot i cant use the same ram on i7 build as the volts are too high. i still want a sli/crossfire board and id like 4 channel ram so i can run 4x2gb ddr3

So?, it's not about what his replacing, its about performance. What's being changed is irrelevant, its what he gets out of it that matters. i5/i7 doesn't exceed what he currently has and can get with that money.

It also depends what he's trying to do with that system. Gaming is very GPU heavy, so getting that second card alone should help him out alot. Any decently clocked quad core CPU can keep up with an i5, him upgrading from it wouldn't be a great idea. If his main agenda with the system is photoshop, video editing, CAD work, and very CPU intensive programs and apps, the i7 and i5 would definitely be a more then reasonably route for him to go. But dedicating the majority of that amount to a cpu/ram/mobo combo that will only offer him a small percentage of increase in performance is completely stupid and unnecessary.

honestly my computer now is not choking or lagging or fps dropping at all, i just had this setup for 2 years now and wanted something new, the only thing i have to complain about is while use FRAPS but im pretty sure everyone has the fps drop while frapsing and id like to maximize performance while using fraps. hence the 2nd card, and the new HDD, if i capture video to a separate HDD it helps quite a bit

If you can't complain don't upgrade. A second GPU won't help you when fraps is active.

A second HDD would help sort out fraps whilst recording, you'll take a FPS hit from writing to the drive whilst the game is trying to read from the drive.

If you really wanted something new, as I said get a 5850 or something : ]

Or a quad core.

my fear is that with my resolution at 1900x1200 that 1 gpu wont be able to keep up, i do need the new hard drive, and im upgrading to win 7 64 bit soo i just dunno what will happen with all the changes.

im really not wanting to buy the 5850 as i have done this in the past (buy the latest GPU) and the performance gain is usually minimal, a crossfired 4890 would probly out perform the 5850 in most applications. maybe ill try running the 2 HDD's OR if i dont upgrade anything ill fork over the couple hundred on a solid state, still looking for mobos for an i7 just for curiosity sake but nothing is grabbing my eye

For fraps you need a gpu with a LOT of main memory & video memory, a rather snappy CPU with more than 2 cores, a fast HDD that your PC can access textures from quickly as the game install, and a separate HDD to pummel with the raw feed.

Your right 2 4890s would outperform a single 5850.

But you'll be using a damn lot less energy so in the long run you'll actually save the money you invested into the card.

Only a reccomendation of course.

I'm pretty certain someone would buy your 4890 on here as well :]

I've seen some sell recently for about 160 usd so if you manage to sell it buying a single 5850 will work out about the same as buying a second 4890.

If not slightly less + energy savings of course.

Something to ponder over : ]

Always love throwing spanners into the works sorry
