Annoying Win7 problem, please help!

Dear TPU

I have a very annoying problem with my computer. Whenever I watch a video/listen to music/play a game, my computer stutters at random moments. I.e. it freezes for a half second and then resumes. I'm sure you've heard of this problem before, but it seems really hard to find an answer on the internet so I'm asking you: please help!

This is most likely dealing with your codecs. Trying downloading cccp or these are pretty good, there are 64 bit versions of it I'd recommend trying to do this first.

For a moment I said to my self this got to be some PIII system

. Clean OS install with latest drivers would be nice too

. Just to be sure I would do some hour of Prime with close watch on CPU temp and PSU voltages then some memtest. But as I said I would start with clean OS install if Kenshai solution wont help.

The funny thing is, my comp withstands a 17h long Prime95 torture test, but can't play a video without stuttering. Ironic really.
Also, I REALLY want to avoid reinstalling windows. That would suck

like someone else mentioned, you most likely need new updated codecs. also, if you aren't already, use vlc.

I ONLY use VLC, so that's no prob. What's the prob with the codecs and stuff though?

I installed it a month ago and i downloaded and installed all the latest chipset drivers. This really seems to be a driver-oriented problem, doesn't it?

That probably means no....what is the extention of the video files? example video.avi
the .avi is the extention.

Well it depends. Sure I play avi's but i also play other types. And it also happens in games and in listening to music

when you listen to music is it the music that stutters? or the visualization?

make sure your vid card drivers are upto date.

VLC is aged and featureless, and not as compatible with Win7 as MPC Homecinema.

VLC works perfectly in windows 7, i've not seen any compatability issues.

OP have you run a defrag on your hard drive to make sure it's not really fragmented as that could cause some random pauses (also make sure your power setting doesn't allow turning hdds off after a certain time of inactivity as that could be causing problems if it stutters if you leave it alone for a few mins then try to do something).

By not as compatible I mean it doesn't use the Vista/7 rendering system as well as MPC[HC] does, not that there are problems.

1. Disable DXVA in ATI drivers and then see if it makes difference.
2. Uninstall all codec packs and then try to play some H.264, WMV or AVI file.
3. In WMP reset all setting, or use default program from control panel.
4. Uninstall graphic card drivers and reinstall up to date driver. Also check out any optional Windows Update for your hardware. Rate your computer performance (WEI).
5. Try different media players.
6. Reinstall OS (Best and last option)

Ok. So I've noticed the stuttering only happens a few hours after I started up my computer. I also tweaked the settings in the BIOS and it stutters alot less now. Suggestions, anyone?

Well, you guys are all focusing on codecs, but you *seem* to forget that it also happens while gaming. Amirite?

So you mean that the computers stutters when it's CPU is stressed (demanding application running)?
Then why did you start the topic talking about video problems?

Anyway, the most probable cause will be the CPU overheating and start to throttle.
Check you system operating temperatures by using some of the programs on the TPU SysInfo downloads section.
