Need opinion on Ultra PSU

Hey guys I saw this awesome deal on a Ultra X3 1000W PSU> http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4267989&Sku=ULT40311 I'm thinking of getting it! I didn't bother reading reviews yet and decided to come straight to TPU for advice. Is this a good choice?

It seems alright, but the it only has 1 12v rail, it does have a good 70amps on it but still I think you could find a better one,alot of good quality PSU's come with at least 2 12v rails depending on the model, up to you man. My Corsair HX1000W is a awesome PSU, its got all the right specs and its gonna last me a long time which is good. try looking for that one but most likely it will be more expensive then that ultra but I do think its still a good purchase, I wouldnt do tri SLI or anything higer than that on a single 12v rail even though its 70amps, Im not a PSU pro but Im still learning like everyone else, anyways i hope this helps.

More 12v rails doesn't make a PSU better. It's all about the amps. A single, high amperage 12v rail is the best solution (all power can be fully accessed). Ultra is usually a low-end brand but maybe their top-end stuff is better.

EDIT: The $159 Corsair 850TX has same 12v rating, and a few more amps on +5v and +3.3v, but no modular cabling.

I've always had my eyes set on Corsair and $150 is at the top of my budget for psu. I was originally going to get this> http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...-_-Power+Supplies-_-Corsair+Memory-_-17139009, but the Ultra is "full" modular and more watts.

I think that Ultra is fudging the watts (maybe peak 1000 watts) but it looks half-decent.

Yeah that's what I was wondering.....I didn't want too jump in and buy just because it was half off. I think 1000W might be a bit overkill for my new setup (in progress). Modular would nice, but maybe I'll just stick with my first choice- the TX850W.

They aren't fudging the Watts, they just throw a lot of extra Amperage to the 3.3 and 5 volt rails, I guess technically it's padding the wattage but a lot of companies do it. Ultra PSUs are reliable though.

The Corsair 850TX has the same +12v amperage and a few more amps on the 3.3v and 5v rails.

Corsair underrates their PSUs.

Don't worry, I have a Cosrair PSU. But I will spend the money on a modular one on my next system. The cables coming off this thing are ridiculous.

I'm not bashing Ultra, I was just presenting some facts, that's all. The modularity looks nice.

Ultra probably rates their PSUs by peak wattage and Corsair probably rates theirs for continuous output.

I would go with the 850TX. More headroom for whatever the future brings.

Using the eXtreme PSU calculator, an i7 975 with 4 sicks of DDR3 RAM, 4 HDs and SLI'd GTX275s requires 492Watts. Not an exact science here, but yeah, a 650Watt PSU that TRULY delivers 650 Watts (like a Corsair) could realistically handle what I listed (before degradation).

These PSU threads always ended up teaching people just how much power they actually required. Shame nobody busts out the power consumption calculator anymore and asks "Why go for a PSU that delivers way more power than you'll ever use?" anymore.

492w is still 75% of the 650w PSU's power capacity, a little bit high don't you think? The 850TX is on sale for $140 with free shipping anyway. And then you added the word "degredation". Sure, he has a wimpy AMD X2 and a 9600 GT ATM, but what if he does actually get that high-end of a system in the future?

And yes, I do know about PSU calculators. Why not get a quality, high wattage PSU if you can afford it? Wouldn't it in turn save you money in the future?

I got the Antec 750Watt and have 2 XFX GTX 285's in sli with a mild OC and a core i7 960 DO OC to 4.0GHZ. Cpu and gpu's are all watercooled with a swiftech mcp655 variable pump and a 480 dual pass rad. with 4 Scythe Kraze 120mm fans on the rad and it handles everything fine. Mine is not modular, I do have all the extra wires stuffed into a space where they are not seen or in the way.

They have the same 12v amperage. Wattage isn't what you should use to pick a PSU.
