Win 7 log on/log off really slow

I got a copy of windows 7 professional for my moms lappy.

Its a
T8100
4gb DDR2
320Gb 7200RPM hdd
Mobile 965 Gpu (onboard of course)
Windows 7 Pro

Considering the RTM on a 5400 Rpm would go faster, this is really messed up.

Why is this taking so long to boot into the desktop?

How did you put win7 on - was it an upgrade or clean install? If it was an upgrade run the disk defragmenter to see if that could be an issue. Also check the manufacturer's website to see if there are any updated drivers/BIOSes available for the laptop.

Its a dell, official win 7 drivers are not out.

Vista Drivers work fine on Win7. otherwise just look at the specs. of the Laptop and you should be able to find Win7 Drivers from the makers of the Devices. Examples are Realtek for Audio and Intel for Chipset/Display.

Note though some Vista Drivers won't work but Most should.

Windows 7 does boot to desktop a bit slower than Vista according to ever bench that I have seen. Have you done a solid defrag?

is there a ton of hardrive activity ? it could have been set to flush the pagefile on shutdown which could be causing the issue

My comp with 7 pro x64 (wcg0 in specs) is almost 2x slower booting into the desktop than my rig (wcg1) which has the RC. Thought it was strange but everything else is fine. I rarely turn them off so it does not bother me.

Not sure with Win 7 but with Vista you should be able to defrag the boot files

1. Open regedit

2. In regedit go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Dfrg\BootOptimizeFunction

New string value called Enable and in data Y

You could try lowering the wait to kill service so stuff gets shut down faster ( “WaitToKillServiceTimeout” )

I have Windows 7 on two of my rigs (rig in specs and T400 laptop), both are very fast to boot and shutdown, naturally, the desktop is faster, but even the laptop is faster than my parent's computer (E6550, 2gb RAM, 2x120GB RAID1) for both bootup and shutdown.
