6600GT running at 110C

Was updating a friend of mine's computer over the weekend -- old AGP 8X system. I bought a used PNY 6600GT 128GDDR3 from Ebay -- works great, ran Furmark at fullblast for 20 minutes, didn't freeze up or get artifacts or anything...

...but it's doing that while it's sitting at 110C. (Idles at about 60C.) Is this normal? Anyone know the max on these cores? I had always heard the 6600GT's ran hot, but wtf.

are drivers up to date if so it might be because it needs bois update

That is pretty warm, even for a 6600GT. If it is old, it might need some new thermal paste to help get temps down.

IIRC, the bridge chip on the AGP 6000 series cards got ridiculously hot, so if it shares a common heatsink with the GPU core, that might be part of the issue also.

Have u checked to make sure the heatsink is on properly. It could be possible the previous owner had an aftermarket cooler on it and didn't put the original on properly, or forgot to put thermal paste on?

Could be a dead fan on the card. Take a look at it, because your GPU is going to fail at that temperature.

Oh, I know for certain that the drivers are NOT up to date on my friend's system -- he had an old FX5200 in there, and I just stuck the 6600GT in. The drivers are probably a year or more old, at least. Could that really make it run warmer?

Yeah, the bridge chip is right below the heatsink (kinda looks like this -- http://cgi.ebay.com/eVGA-nVidia-GeF...emQQptZPCC_Video_TV_Cards?hash=item45efc30033). Was definitely going to try taking off that heatsink and replacing the thermal paste with some good Artic Silver, just to try.

That would make a lot of sense -- definitely going to try this.

I checked it, and the fan was definitely spinning... I think. Was even reporting 100% in GPU-Z. I actually wouldn't mind if it was something like this, even though it'd be a lot more expensive to fix than just replacing the thermal paste.

Judging by that, it looks like the bridge chip has its own little heatsink.

If that is the case, you might want to just drop a VF-700 on it and be done with it. Should be about $20 after shipping. Not only should it be more than enough to cool that core down, but the downward blowing fan will cool the memory and the bridge chip better. This is particularly important because I seem to remember the bridge chip overheating and failing being a major issue with the nVidia AGP cards.

The stock HSF for the 6600GT's suck! Mine was running up near 70C until I replaced it with a VF-700 and it stayed around 30C. This was an XFX Geforce 6600GT 256MB DDR3. The other problem is case cooling. These cards DO GET VERY WARM, so if his case has poor air flow there might be another issue.

That looks like a damn good cooler -- going to look around and see if I can get a used one on Ebay or something before I plunk down that $7 shipping.

Well, I took off the existing heatsink and replaced the old gunky thermal paste with some Arctic Silver Ceramique, and the load temps are down from 110C, to 94C. I can almost live with that, considering it won't be run at those temps for the most part. (Idles at around 49C, too.)

A few weird problems, though -- I found on Nvidia's site that the latest version of the Forceware drivers actually support the 6600GT still, so I figured I'd install them.

Seemed to work fine, and they apparently even downclock the card when it's in idle mode (from 500/1200 to 300/600), however I got tons of visual artifacts in games, especially Civ IV. All games are patched up as well as Windows. Oddly enough, when I downgraded the Forceware drivers to 169, the visual artifacts went away.

Any ideas?

I used to have one long time ago... max temp on these chip are 120c so your 110c is not to far away lol!

Better cool it down try adding an 80mm fan right in front of the heatsink see if that helps?

Every once in a while problems like these can be caused by dirty old components mixing with new components when a new driver is installed over a new one. I've never had it happen, but if it didn't happen then DriverSweeper wouldn't exist.

Also above I noticed that you said you think the fan is on but you weren't sure. There should be an audible increase in sound when a game is played, I believe. Unless that card just has a silent fan that always runs at 100% *shrug*

No, that's it -- the fan runs all the time. I look at the card and it's spinning, must just run at 100% all the time -- I just wish it ran faster.

Guess I can try DriverSweeper this time -- but the system this is being installed on is fragile as hell -- typical 3-4 year old XP install used by a novice. It's hardly ever been updated and has McAfee installed, to boot.

I would format & reinstall all , but as for as your temp on the 6600GT i would buy a can of air & clean the card up if that doesn't help i would get some AS & take heatsink off the card clean it & apply AS & then put the heatsink back on

my previous card was an MSI 6600 256 Mb AGP 8x, its idle temp was 60 C. and when playing it reached 90+ .
nothing to worry about as long as tha fan is working fine .
