ION based rigs are probably going to be bottlenecked by the Atom processor as far as gaming goes. The IGP itself is probably comparable to the GeForce 9400m IGP if that helps.

Yeah and if you plan on using the one with ATOM i it, even the DC atom is lacking. With the IGP you could get away with L4D2 and source games, as they arent too demanding games, but COD games you wont be able to play, you be better off with a low power card like a HD4670.

Here is a decent review that might give you an idea.

It seems that the platform is extremely CPU limitted in gaming, as there is no performance gain by dropping the resolution in their tests.

Personally, if it was me, I would avoid the Atom based varients, and instead pick up one that will take a 775 processor. Drop an E3200 in there, and you have a machine that should be much better at gaming, playing almost any modern game at playable framerates at atleast 1024x768/Low. Power consumption will be higher, but only marginally.

The Ion really can't handle those games you listed. It can easily do some light gaming, but you'll be very disappointed if you think COD4 is going to run well on a Aton/Ion netbook or nettop. The 785 chipset can just barely play those games if you have a beefy AMD CPU. Same is true of the 9400IGP and a beefy Intel CPU.

ION isnt good enough for playing modern 3D games. It is great for video decoding and media streaming etc. and will run some older 3D stuff. It is similar in performance to an ATI 9500/9700. Not more. It will therefore play COD quite fine. COD1.

Sort of, the chipset combined with an Atom processor is called the ION platform. However, the chipset is also available for socket 775 applications, and I believe AM2+ applications as well(though that might be a completely difference chipset labelled the same, it give the same function though).

The 9300 actually can handle COD4, on low@1024x768, but as I said the Atom 330 would hold him back more than anything.

Well, on the AMD front they already have the 785G chipset which is a quite solid onboard. :p

Hmm i remember reading somewhere that AMD has released a Althon ULV(ultra low volt) called neo, seems it for netbooks but i specifically remember reading about it being in a ITX platform.

There are a few AMD mini ITX out there, 780G chipsets and an Nvidia 8200 but you have to use regular AMD CPU's which are really power efficient compared to Intels.

It uses Laptop memory however, keep that in mind.

8200 is very weak in games.

Neither AMD solution is good at all really.

Your best bet for a powerful mini-ITX gaming rig would be

Intel

Zotac 9300 mini-ITX

or any 65w Intel CPU processor E3300/E5200

Well the OP said he wanted a low cost and low power platform, but it doesn't have to be small. Mini-ITX systems are.. too small and too limited for a desktop.

A micro-ATX 785G + Athlon II X2 should be very cheap and consume low power. Spend some $25 in a HD3470 and Crossfire with the IGP. Should be enough for some light gaming.

Atom sucks for desktop, really. It's too slow for pretty much anything.

yeah i understand, intel atom really suck, but i didn't know it will be that suck, but didn't amd hd3200 is more powerfull than 9300
