ATI 9800 XT 512mb DDR3 - anyone heard of it?

As the title suggests, i just stumbled apon a 512mb DDR3 version of the 9800XT...just wondering if anyone has heard of it

There is no 9800 XT with GDDR3 or 512MB being sold to the open market.

I've got an ATI 9800XT here, last of them made afaik/in fact, for sale, but... not sure what DDR type memory it uses!

R360 doesn't even support DDR3... unless it does unoffically, but I never heard of it. Only DDR1 and DDR2. I highly doubt they did that as well, the first card with 512MB from ATI was in the X800 based series; that being the X800XL. 512MB on a 9800XT would be a total waste anyways. The card couldn't possibly support the textures speed wise to fill the buffer.

Link with the information about this. I highly doubt it's true, but I may be mistaken.

512MB would help textures GREATLY. Except that you won't find an older game that uses this much texture memory. And the newer games are not going to be happy with "just" a 9800.

Seems like an interesting card for a second system. How much do they want for it?

There are many cards that ATI doesn't sell to the open market, like the other Quad-Core ATI on the other thread made for Military purposes. We never know what else they can do to their cards.

I would have to say it never existed. There were some 256MB DDR2 versions I believe, but that is something I cannot prove as well. THis sounds like a hoax/misprint.

But you never know, there's a Quad-GPU ATI 9700 that was made for Military purposes, and not many people knew about it. ATI 9700, 1GB total memory (4x256Mb), 4 GPU's.

I have never heard about 512MB 9800XT. On my 9800XT 128MB during all the tests (3DMark03/05 default resolution) and games like Doom3 1024/768 High details the usage of the texture RAM has never reached more than 116MB (the same did happen with the X800XT PE and X850XT PE at the same settings). For me there is no reason such card to exists

Actually it wouldn't help, because as I said - The resolutions that would take up the 512MB buffer couldn't be handled by that card. Therefore it would be useless and therefore, little reason to have 512MB version of such a card. Point of diminish and return.

Azn Tr14dZ > Yes you are very correct. ATI had a dual card, and I even believe a quad card solution years before Crossfire that they used in flight simulators. These were not availiable to the public at all as far as I know.

it wasnt a misprint b/c he says it in nice bold letters, and emphasises that there are only 25 made

But i dont get why the seller would risk ruining his reputation over a card like that

...if he wanted to make some money by using fraud, you would think he would sell a laptop or computer, something he can make big bucks on

I think for specialist applications it might make a grat difference, e.g. CAD work, or flight simulator. The FACT that TODAY the card is easily beaten by even a x800se means that it should have no particular price premium.. since a x800se is so cheap.

BUT, you cannot say that 512MB makes no performance difference compared ot the 256MB version. For MOST USERS, the difference will never kick in... but for specialist applications it may have been a very useful upgrade at the time.

In today's standards, a 512MB buffer at high resolutions does make a difference - It's a must in some situtations. However, it's not a perfomance increase, but more of a support issue. Same as when you need more RAM, if you run out you're going to slow down, but having a premium of RAM does not speed up the application unless (assuming you didn't change the configuration of the memory) you've filled the amount you have and the computer is resorting to other memory sources like the Page File.

The thing is, programs that use such buffers are due to massive resolutions with tons of detail. A 9800XT never had to deal with such resolutions and textures, and couldn't if had to. It's just not powerful enought to do so. I'm not saying there wasn't something that was a memory hog, cause I can't prove it at all - However, if there was ever such a need, wouldn't you think there would be more standardization of such cards? Like there is now...

If the card is real, then it's more of e-penis thing from ATI that they got 512MB of onboard memory on a card.

But anyways, I'm not going to get into the usefullness of a 512MB version of 9800XT anymore. I really don't care about it, as I wont be using a 9800XT anytime soon.
