4850 vs 5770?

So, I just replaced my PSU only to find that my graphics card was faulty, not the PSU, so I'm looking to upgrade from a Radeon 4850 and I think the 5770 might fit the bill - I like to game on max settings at 1680 x 1050 - the 4850 cannot quite keep up with that though, so I was wondering if a 5770 can, or if I should pick a different card altogether...?

5770 runs things for me at that res smooth as butter. The only thing I can't completely max out is GTA4 but I'm probably limited by my dual core processor there.

IMO, if you've even remotely thought about having a card > 5770, then buy the used 4850 for now. Only going to be a handful of DX11 games in the near future, I'd wait till there is more selection in games & for the prices of the 5000 series to come down.

Well, with my current card i cannot even reboot my PC - have to power off, then power back on... so leery of 4850s now.

Do some homework before you throw numbers around. The 5770 consistently outruns the 4850; it runs with a 4870 at least and that's just at stock. Plus DX11 and the savings on power consumption, it is definitely a step up over the 4850.

Generally speaking the 4850's DX11 equivalent is the Radeon HD 5750 which usually runs a little faster than either the HD 4850 or its Nvidia counterpart, the GTS 250. The Radeon HD 5770 on the otherhand, is currently consistently a few FPS below the 4870 1GB and the stock GTX 260, this may change with drivers but most people lump the 5770, 4870 and GTX 260 is the same category of performance as each other.

Agreed. It's widely thought that the 5xxx series are being driver limited on purpose until Fermi drops. That is, if you believe the conspiracy theorists....

I have a pair of 5770's and LOVE them but this is right. They are very high now, I got mine for $139 (now $179)

There should be a 48xx series on sale somewhere that is less than half, that should hold you over till the price is better.

I could understand buying the low end 5000 series if they were selling for $100 or less. (they will be soon enough.. I still remember when they first came out how cheap they were too.

But to spend $180 on a bottom end card does not make sense. Just looking at some of the 5700 series reminds me of my first card for this computer an Asus 4870 with a crappy, noisy, cooler fan on it, and even that I wouldn't go back to now.

The top end 4890s are getting cheaper, and are a much better value.

two 4890s may equal one 5870 but they will eat a lot more power and put out a lot more heat.

I'm getting close to having enough money to get a 5870 for my 4870x2. Yea is sort of a sidegrade, but it will run cooler and eat a lot less power at idle which is where my system spends most of the time.

I agree too that a 4850 doesn't equal a 5770. Even given 4870 and 4890 prices I'd rather have a 5770. It's not ATI's low end card. It's more like the low end of the high end. The low end is still to come.

The top end 4890s are getting cheaper, and are a much better value.

I would NEVER get 4870/4890s over 57/58 series anything unless they were under $100.
They use a lot more power and make a lot more heat.

5770s are great cards and it is very true there not low end by any means there the mid tier cards

think of it like this

your know the gts250 is really the 9800gtx which was the 9series high end single gpu card but even so with the gt200 series it was renamed and stood in the middle of the pack

the 5770 is that card for ati

it is depending on clock speed somewhere between 4850 and 4890 performance and it really depends on the game now the 5770 is the mid range 5k series card but it equals 4xxx series high end everyone knows the 48701gig and 4890 are still capable of 1920x1200 max settings in most games now add in low idle power low 100% load power DX11 and cool temps and you have a winning card

in a few reviews that show overclocking potential the 5770 can and will compete with stock gtx 260 and in a few games like devil may cry 4 and many other capcom games the 5770 will compete with a gtx275

so lets compared $179 for $3xx perfromance and all the while at much less power consumption and cooler and quieter

also a 5770 at full load = 120 watts 4890 = 268 according to reference design boards

id say grab a 5770 overclock it like mad and enjoy

and if u can wait save up and grab a 5850 when its price returns to normal

LOL, in ther last year I have had about 10 dif mobos and 9600GT,GTOs,9800GTs,GTS250's,HD4830s,4850s,4870,4770s,5770s. Its hard for keep to keep updated.
n my qpack mod thread I think I changed hardware 5 times before I finished the case.

after having my 5770 for a week I must say the best thing I love about it is I can sit here and play games with my bedroom door closed and it doesnt get rediculously hot in here.

hopefully when the other 5770 comes today it won't cause too much heat to where my room gets hot again because Im really diggin the coolness of this one.

i would sweat and the room would get so warm when i had the gtx 275

2. It will outrun a GTX260-216 if OC'd
3. Its price tag is now $160 shipped..

Anyway, its better, but if you are able to go crossfire it might be worth it in the long run because 2x HD5770s = Better than an HD5870 when OC'd.
