How do you setup 5.1 speakers for PC?

I've always wanted to know how one would go about to setup 5.1 speakers for their computer? Say for example a set of X-540's. Do the rear speakers actually go behind you or what?

I looked at the link and it had what I expected, speakers surrounding you, but that was for true home theater. I'm sitting a foot from the screen, not at least 6 feet.

I noticed that a lot of people place all 5 speakers right in front of them, would that work?

Bit of an old pic but this is my setup(can only see one side) but it functions absolutely perfectly as far as proper rear imaging goes.
I understand I have corner desk so it may not work for everyone but it works perfectly for me.

That would work, but that kill the point of the surround sound system, you're suppose to hear sounds from behind you...

I already tried putting the speakers behind me, and because it was so close, it was really hard to feel the different between surround and not surround setting.

for my 5.1 set up i have the center speaker on top of my monitor, the sub by my feet, the left and right front speakers about 12in from either side of the monitor, and the rear 2 behind me on each corner of my desk(i have a corner desk also)

My setup has everything (speakers, power, volume control) connected to the subwoofer, than a wire that's actually 3 seperate wires coming from the subwoofer (color coded) to the sound card.

Would it be pointless to buy a 5.1 setup if I don't have a corner desk? Because I don't and I see no way to conveniently setup the speakers properly.

Well i always tried to get the full feeling of my 5.1 speakers in my super small room, so i came up with this three set-ups.

"Corner view"

"ceilin"

Oh btw i used screws and whats not to attachs my speakers to the wall/ceilin

Yes, i noticed that if you put a sub around a corner the sound will get very amplified trough out the whole room, especially on the other corner facing parallel to it.
