Hmm... 3 broken iPods later, Apple has not convinced me in the durability department.

If you listen to your iPad for music as you walk around, its going to be unconfortable. It's like having a big block attached to your ears. The same principle goes for a laptop, or eReader.

Ive not yet broken an iPod, and my Macbook pro took a full glass of rum and coke to the face and is still working like a champ..

I have also talked to people that can't keep an iPod working for the life of them. It's about how you take care of your devices. When properly taken care of, things last a really long time. My iPhone has survived being in my pocket while doing combat drills, Qualifying, firing machine guns, and even through a downpour at the range. A lot of people's ipods can't even handle going to school on a bad week. Take care of your device, and it will treat you well.

As for music, the iPad isn't designed as a music player. I have a TON of iTunesU videos and audio files that would complement a slideshow, or video perfectly. It's ability to pay music is just a bonus.

I dislike how Apple doesnt allow for expandable memory. I understand it limits Apple users and it's a highly effective marketing point but it's crap.

Just make the two models with 3G or WiFi, add a USB port, SD/MicroSD slot, and god bless it make it compatible with every video type(excluding flash to force users to buy on itunes is crap).

the funny thing is on the stock ipad apple makes apple about a 40% profit, and the more you buy the more profit they make with outrageous accessory pricing sometimes making 55% on those things going by the components alone says fudzilla..

The bill of materials for the cheapest $499 SKU with 16GB of memory and WiFi connectivity is $270.50. Even when service costs are added, the cost ends up at $290.50. It gets worse with pricier models. The $629 SKU with 16GB and 3G costs $306.50 to build. The 32GB model with 3G costs $322 to make, but it will sell for $729. This is a 55.1 percent margin, something you rarely see in drug trafficking, let alone the tech industry.

now thats how you make money.

What is the point?

I dont see many advatages to buying the iPad. It does the exact same thing as the iPhone just with a larger screen. So my quewstion what are the advantages to this device. What purpose does it serve? Why wouldnt you just buy an iphone or touch?

The reason this is a giant ipod touch, and why that is not a bad thing is simple...the app store. Granted the limitations of the ipad are plain as day to anyone, but its clear the reason this is a giant ipod touch is because apple wanted a device to improve on what their ipod touch could do. If it was an atom based tablet (or any other platform for that matter), they would lose out on all the app store compliance and what you will end up with is an underpowered platform running full version of OSX..it would be too slow for what people would want it to do, just as so many complain about netbooks. By making it a giant ipod touch you improve on what people already like.

Ive had an iphone for a few months and given my usage of apps I think I'd like an ipad. What apps do I use? Well the XBMC remote app to control my media center...with that I can see all my cover art, movie/tv descriptions, and once I find something I want to watch, I can hit play and my tv starts showing it. Is $400 a lot to pay for a universal remote...yea...but ask logitech how many harmony 1100 remotes they have sold. The ebook reader apps are great as well, I dont want to spend the money on buying a dedicated device just yet, but the apps on the Iphone work very well, upgrading from this little screen to the 10" ipad would be a nice step up. Orb live makes it easy for me to stream all my movies, tv shows, and documents to my phone, so accessing the same files on a bigger device would only make things better.

And the same can be said about countless other apps running on the ipad. So all the entertainment aspects of my iphone could be improved by a bigger screen, and the bigger screen opens up to a world of much more usable apps for note taking, studying, reference, and so on. The instant on abilities and current/future app store programs could make this a wonderful backpack buddy. I think the ipad designed apps are going to make this thing a very desirable gadget, it is too soon to really judge this thing.

It's mean you can do everything an Ipad do, just slower on your Iphone. Apple want exclusive apps for their Ipad that Iphone can't use, not because they can't do it, but because they want to sell their Ipad.

BS.

ok - this is just like touch screen phones - they're nice - but what you really want is a keyboard - and an ipad with a sliding keyboard is a netbook...

I think apple will bring out a revision of the ipad and it will fix it's flaws and it will be half decent.

I think apple will bring out a revision of the ipad and it will fix it's flaws and it will be half decent.

They always do. But only one revision at a time. This way they can make more money. First comes the iPad, the apple fans rant and rave about it for days. Then comes an iPad with a camera, more people buy, including all those with the old iPad, because they just gotta have the latest apple. Then comes the next release but this iPad has a camera AND a USB port. Everyone buys it now... again.

The cycle repeats.

It's a retarded way of doing things, only a way that gets them loads of money.

trouble is not really the tech - or even the application (a device like this would be very useful), it's Apple, and the draconian way in which they choose to control their hardware. Think of the same device created by HP or Dell, running a MS OS, multi-tasking, upgradeable, able to read memory cards (for goodness sakes), 720p screen...

W1z, I am so dissapointed that I noticed this question on iTampon in the front page poll. Can we remove it and change the poll to something more useful instead, like do we like W1z? (Of course, the answer is yes, otherwise we wouldn't get all the juicy reviews)
