Right... a mate of mine who own's his own business asked me to go repair a pc for his company (I'm not even on the books, it was just a one off) well all went well as i thought, except i got an email from the guy who's laptop i repaired... here is what i got

"I am using pc upstairs as I can't log on to hotmail.

My password/adress are not being accepted.

I can't access email.

Also scan soft paperport 11 is missing. I am looking for the brother installation disc now to try and load it.

On Saturday, I re-started the pc after all the changes. It kept switching itself off and I must have tried to start it 12 or more times until it kicked in. Seems ok now, but I am having to 'end program' on paperport to use pc at all"

Basically all i did was install & scan with CCleaner and Spybot S&D, I'd be greatful for any insight on the problem here...

Ouch, i had something like that happened to me with a friend of mine. The hotmail problem seems easy, tell him to clear all his rubbish internet data [history, cookies and such] and if that doesnt work, direct him to another internet browser [Firefox, chrome..you know the drill]

For the other problem, it seems a bit more difficult since the software he is using is not that common [to my knowledge]. try googling his problem, like:

"scan soft paper port 11 missing"
"scan soft paper port missing"

lastly, just tell him to back up all the necessary data and to just re install paperport, and if you want, ask him if he wants you to do it for him [show that you care :)]

and if that doesn't work, a whole OS reinstall [or just system restore] might have to be considered.

Pretty much what I thought, At least it's nothing too serious, To what deleted the needed file I'm curious if it was CCleaner or Spybot... as I would like to prevent this from happening again during the next scan.

I couldn't be sure without testing, so un install the one you think might be causing the problem [i think its spybot] and then check if the problem still happens [same with the other one] and if the problem still happens without both, uninstall [and deleted any file related to such programs] and then do a system restore to a kinda oldish date, like a week before you migled with the system.

-Also use a 3rd party uninstaller like Revo Uninstaller To get more in depth uninstall.

CCleaner is usually a good program for uninstalling/registry cleaning (hence why I use it), I did think spybot myself.. but could this be down to some type of spyware installing itself into the program the guy is having problems with... just curious.

however I will not uninstall Spybot, simply reinstall the program the guy is having problems with, scan with spybot, except this time look at file's it will be deleting - I didn't do this last time as there was around 480 problems to be fixed!

If it's not spybot what has caused this then It's obviously CCleaner deleting the needed file from the registry, which lucky enough I did back up before removing the unneeded files.

What was the inital problem? Why did you run CCleaner and Spybot? Was teh computer infected? Becouse if it was, deleting the files may have been the only option. Not all files can be dissinfected.

Yes the system was infected, as I mentioned before Spybot alone found around 480 problem's, which also had to do an ofline scan to further delete more files.

Than he should just re-install the program and it should work.

Haha, turn's out to be really simple, the email error was due to him not typing his email correctly!! The program error was to do with his printer not being installed correctly! so all in all it was very easy to solve :D

Hence I was expecting the worst, like I did something totally wrong and unneeded... I hate getting myself worked up about things like this. but o well his error and all working as should be, plus a little extra cash in the sky rocket.
