My 1st pc was an old pentium 1 166mhz w/128mb sd ram and a fantastic in its day voodoo 2 16mb

I was given this back in 2002 off my then mother in law and this was old even then, before that I had no idea about computers. After that I was given a pentium 2 compaq desktop pc and upgraded the ram in it and also fitted an pci adsl modem which is when I realised that upgrading wasn't that hard.

in 2003 I built my 1st pc, an Athlon XP 2500+ Barton core (running at 3200+ and reported as one also, those were the days ;) ) with 512mb ddr and an 80gb hdd and a S3 Savage 2000 64mb gpu, though I soon realised although the savage had 64mb ram it was no good and thats when I started to learn more and realised there was more to it than having a sufficient amount of ram

At that time if you wanted to game there was only really 2 names out there (same as now)ATI and NVIDIA, so I bought a Geforce mx440 64mb to replace the savage and I was amazed at the quality of the graphics on Splinter Cell compared to the PS2.

Its funny having that old P1 was at the time taking me on a life long journey that I never would have imagined, and now I am a total hardware freak and love my (expensive) hobby, I love that old P1, Thank you!!! :toast:

this kinda thread makes you stop and look at how rapidly technology advances. Back in 1982 you had ~1mhz CPUs and just ~10 years later you had 233-450mhz(P2) and 10 years after that you have 450mhz-1.4ghz(p3) CPUs and now there are CPUs over 3ghz and nearing 4ghz stock

1982-~1mhz
1992~233-450mhz
2002~450-1.4ghz
2009 ~1.6ghz-3.4+ghz (the Atom is the slower one)

My first PC was a Gateway with a 75mhz Pentium, 32mb of RAM, and a 600MB HDD. Ran Windows95

The first PC that I built was a Dual-Processor Pentium 3 900mhz OC'ed @ 1100mhz, 1.5GB DDR (incredible for the time), a pair of 60GB HDDs and Windows 2000 Server. GPU I believe was a Radeon 9800 Pro Awesome computer, I wish I still had it

Well, I made mine to a dice roller(simple random number generator), and used it to write reports and stuff with, so I got some personal computing use out of it.

Didn't think it was a dig, just explaining my perspective. :rockout:

Hard to beleive that that was so long ago...even worse is to think how many pcs I have had since then, and how much cash I dropped on all that hardware over the years...I thikn in 2008 I spent like $50k on parts...not 50k new money, but with selling the old stuff, and then buying new... I still have all my receipts, I should add it up.

Speed advances are great but what's really amazing is what can be done with them now compared to what was being done manually in 1982...

My first pc was (I think??) an 80286, it was a horizontal tower. Don't ask me what was inside but lol my dad had bought it for some $3000 duh! The monitor wasn't even a colour one - I remember we had to choose between a having white graphics, green graphics or the brown graphics. I don't remember if it took 3 1/2 inch floppies. I remember using 5 1/4 floppies all the time for it. I think the OS was 2.something.... DOS obviously. I'm getting this from a 20-y/o memory...

The first pc I built was in 2007 - E4300, 2GB RAM and 8600GTS.

First PC and first build are one in the same.

Built from scrap parts my school gave to me because they were through it out.

VIA 400 Mhz, 96 MB RAM, Windows 95, 1x 8GB HDD, 1x 3.2 GB HDD, CD player (not burner, Max 52x speed), using a mobo with 1 burnt out IDE port. Graphics were an intergrated VIA something Accelerator 2. I remember most of this because I still have the think in a closet at my dad's girlfriend's house. I gave it to her when my father bought me a E machine, which was not much better, but had a faster processor (700 Mhz I think), 128 MB of RAM, and CD BURNER w00t!

They never throw anything away. I can put my hands on both of those worthless piles of memories and scrap metal.

First pc i had was a packard bell pos - had a 700mhz celeron (p3 based i think, cant remember). She had 30mb of system ram with 2mb going off to the garbage even back then that was intel integrated graphics. She had a 8gb hdd and came with windows *cough* ME */cough* and also a cd reader and floppy drive. She did have a good 17" crt monitor which ran at 1280x1024 with her.

Ive never built a new pc from scratch for myself - i started with the above machine and upgraded gradually until i have ended up with what i have now - ive built several pcs with the spares from my upgrades over the years and the oldest thing in my pc atm is my 3 year old power supply.

My first major upgrade to the first pc above was an amd athlon xp 2500 (i think?) and 128mb ram on a mobo with some via chips (sb was, cant remember what the NB was) oh and XP - the BSOD was like an hourly thing on ME.
