Hey all, I am thinking of changing my recently acquired Elixer and Sidewinder over to wireless keyboard and mouse.

Few thing i want to know, are they any good. I know that when they first came out the battery life was something to be desired, has this changed/improved vastly?

And also anyone got any ideas on what would be a good set/buy for these?

Any input is welcomed.

EDIT: if you did have an idea then let me know, budget around £50 for both though.

They have improved, but gaming-wise there is still some lag, so maybe that could be a factor to consider especially if you are a hardcore gamer ;)

logitechs wireless stuff can handle gaming, if you can find their good stuff.

My dinovo edge, G7 and MX600 (crap scroll wheel, no good for gaming) all work beautifully two rooms away (20M of HDMI cable works wonders under the floor ;) )

problem is, the best stuff is reaaaaaally expensive.

Never use wireless for gaming if it can be helped. It's one of those things you just don't do... it almost tops the list of heinous crimes, second only to murder.

Is what i thought. I game occasionally, i'm not a hardcore gamer for sure, and i rarely play online.

Mussels - i will look into the logitech stuff, shame that is sounds stupidly expensive though.

Logitech might cost more, but when you have a problem with they're product and they upgrade you to they're most recent counterpart, you completely understand why you pay a bit more.
Logitech products are second to none to start with, but when you ad they're customer service/support to the deal...nobody can touch them.
I have examples of warranty replacements to back this up if your interested.
I'll leave my most recent experience to give you an idea.
My logitech G51 speaker system, one speaker started cutting out recently..chances are its my fault..so I call them and explain the issue. they inform me they can't honor the warranty unless they upgrade me to the Z5500 digital because they don't make the g51 anymore.

They have done similar things for me at least 4 times over the past 10 years. If logitech has an option I ALWAYS purchase it over the competition.

Also I don't know where your pricing stuff, but if looking at logitechs page for prices, its never accurate in comparison to stores.

Well if the G51 is discontinued and they know you won't accept a lower end X-740, their only choice is to upgrade you to the next step up in the 5.1 area and that's the Z-5500. It's not like it costs them that much more to manufacturer the Z-5500, the difference is negligible to them.

I absolutely agree. Tried a lot of 'em and nothing's better than the wire. And it's not all about the lag, mice just pass wrong directions info to the transmitter and if you play sniper games like me, it could be "deadly".

Oh you think MS would give you a 350$ upgrade under any circumstance?
How about Asus?
Or for that matter ANYONE in the computer industry
I've dealt with many, most try to avoid covering warranties at all costs, they force YOU to pay shipping back into them, logitech covers its ALWAYS, they force you to wait until things are tested and then they decide if they should replace it.
if you register your product, Logitech covers ALL replacement costs and doesn't even require you ship the product back.
They are bar none the fucking best in the business.

not to mention it was MY FAULT they were damaged. No other company covers what you damage and everyone knows it.

I had logitech once replace a mouse because the paint was wearing off!

logitech may be great in canada/USA, here in Au their support is utterly worthless. they dont even DO RMA or returns, at all - return it to where you bought it, or go F yourself is pretty much their attitude. You cant even contact them and ask for help with a product or spare parts - they just repeatedly tell you, return it where you bought it.

Can't speak about that, I'm in Canada.
Although, based on my experience I tend to believe theres a lot more to that. I've heard that story but its always third, or even fourth gen stories which makes them probably entirely not true.
But not being in australia I can only base my opinion on my own experience....if thats the case, that sucks...but again tell me a good company for warranties in this industry.
hell Apple 1/2 the time won't cover a warranty unless you sign a gag order. And now they've even passed a rule that if your a smoker, they don't have to honor your warranty.
I once tried to replace a drive through maxtor (this was a few years ago) but it took them 2 years and 18 months of fighting with them to get my damn drive back!

thats first hand experience from me. it took 3 months to arrange a warranty on my z-5500's (store sent me to logitech, logitech sent me to store... vice versa) and i had to pay nearly $100 to have the damn things shipped, since it was over the standard weight limit and logi wouldnt allow it to be sent in two packages.

My point is this: talk about the products, not the warranty service - this varies, region by region, country by country, and store by store.

See I believe theres more to this, I know tons of people who have had to replace speakers and your the first to ever say you had to send your spekers in, they only require the control pod.
I'm not saying your lying, I'm jut saying theres more to it, its not so cut and dry as your making it sound as it doesn't ad up to literally 100s of experience i know about.
Granted, not in AU, but why would they require the entire package from someone in AU but not from hundreds in north america?
Also, when you call, do you get a call center thats in AU? cause that might be the difference right there. When I call, iIm speaking to someone in Canada..do you know where they're AU call center is?
Depending on where it is and how its run, it may have everything to do with the call center and nothing to do with logitech.

it also varies with how the customer speaks to the rep, not just by region.
Support should have as much to do with any purchase as the product itself, its damn well stupid for us as consumers to not EXPECT good support and demand it when we don't get it!

they do not allow you to send the control pod in my country. As i've been saying... they suck here. Its just a general warning, and not something i intended to have to debate.

logitech AU wont even issue you an RMA number, until its been confirmed faulty by the store you bought it. They give you a case number, you return it to the store with teh case number, they report to logitech if its faulty or not, and they they send you the RMA number, which you pass onto the store, who gives you a unit off the shelf and logitech sends them a new one

so why weren't you on the phone to HEAD OFFICE instead of the call center?
I don't believe it, simply because my experience and 10000s of others has been incredible..one guy, who may have a beaf he created and my whole thought process based on experience should be thrown out the window? Sounds logical to me.

again, is it logitech, or a call center? do you even know?

so why weren't you on the phone to HEAD OFFICE instead of the call center?
I don't believe it, simply because my experience and 10000s of others has been incredible..one guy, who may have a beaf he created and my whole thought process based on experience should be thrown out the window? Sounds logical to me.

because you cant talk to them. they dont let you. can we get this thread back on topic?

I have to second Mussels' statement: you can only go by whatever the stipulation is per region/country/whatever.
Obviously, you're in a much better position in Canada, than we are here in Australia. We've always been considered the backwoods of the world, despite having the second-highest uptake of technology in the world (after the USA).

What Australia lacks is population, thus clout.
When there's an RMA involved, in virtually anything PC related, we normally need to ship the item back and pray to God that something decent gets done in return..

It sucks the big one sideways, and not pleasantly either..

So another words, its a normal thing with all companies in AU?\
Ya that would suck...but isn't a part of it that the people allow it?
It would only take a few 100 small claims cases for companies to start changing they're ideas about whats acceptable.
Again, i'm really big on support. I think if a company can't give proper support they have no business being in business.

its normal to have to send it back, its not normal to have to send it to where bought it only. other brands (WD, seagate, samsung) allow you to send it direct to them, for example.

Again, please... can we keep this about wireless keyboards and mice? i think we've covered this topic enough.

There's a famous line in fine print, pretty much everywhere in the world, that people miss in warranties:
"even if the product fails in its intended purpose"
Now, legalities aside in a product being merchantable, all that's required by any company for this argument, is for them to honour warranty on the product, should it fail in its basic duty (eg, won't even turn on, let alone function correctly).
The onus is on the buyer to remedy the situation, by either: shipping it back to the manufacturer; or, by returning it to the place of purchase.
Sometimes this becomes a headache, as one or the other, will refer you to the other (Mussels did point this out).
So, if you bought from a reputable supplier (muwaha!.. sorry, I just had to cackle maliciously then), you may be in luck.
Moreover, however, when you need to deal with the supplier directly, you may as well just buy something anew - the time & effort involved in replacing the faulty item(s) simply isn't worth the 3rd-degree hassles you tend to get put through.

Admittedly, though, most are still OK, but even the best known manufacturers have a bit of a chuckle when it comes to RMAs & Australia..

EDIT:
That said, I've encountered zero issues with my Logitech wireless keyboard/mouse combo.
Been most reliable for over 5 years, so I'm happy! :)

For my money I am very happy with:
Logitech Wave Pro Desktop Black USB 2.4 GHz Wireless Keyboard & Mouse Combo

The mouse is excellent with adjustable dpi sensitivity by a button on the mouse. The mouse is rechargable by USB that comes with an ac adapter so it may be recharged from an outlet when the PC is off. I didn't even bother to install the logitech software that opens up other features. The keyboard is the best I have used by far -- much quieter than previous keyboards -- I hunt and peck and really pound the keyboard, but this one feels very smooth and is very quiet.

My gaming is limited to mostly 3rd person games -- not fast paced shooters. That said I have never noticed any lag. It runs on the pricey side but is worth it.

The only thing you might want to do is purchase a USB cable extension so you can have the 2.4 GHz receiver close by. I need the extension when use my HDTV for Games and movies.
