Are there any PC games yet which fully utilize a quad-core CPU? I heard that GTA IV was one fo them, World in Conflict was rumored to fully use a quad-core, are there any others? GRID?

Saints Row II won't run smooth without a tri-core. I'm not sure if it fully utilizes a quad-core though.

Will Crysis 2 and the CryEngine 3 be programmed to be multi-threaded throughout Four processor cores?

Saints Row 2 struggles even with quadcores

Grand Theft Auto 4 fully uses a quad i can nearly scale fps with cores

Supreme Commander say what you want with that little core optimizer thing it will use more cores one of the only ways to get huge battles to run smoothly is to use that optimizer to force it to use more cores

Supreme Commander Forged Alliance same as above

Not surprising given their 3D engine. They load up all cores pretty evenly on my i7 and Q9650.

yes it does Chaos if i force the game to use 1 2 3 or 4 cores fps just keeps going up with more cores till you become gpu limited

How'd you force the cores to do that?

true but that dosent mean the implementation will be great either as it stands i listed all NON dx11 games that support quads and use them :toast:

Most modern DX10 and DX11 games are only programmed to run on Two CPU cores. Why does GTA IV run so poorly even on monster systems if it uses all Four cores?

hmm lets see

there physics
pedestrian AI
shadow maps on all objects
etc etc

basically your CPU is handling the physics for everything so ppl cars bikes explosions etc thats handled on the cpu now factor that in on mass scale

i can make Rome total war Medieval 2 total war and Empire total war break any systems back basically your gpus can only render as fast your cpu can provide information so if the cpu is swamped with calculations its gonna have a hard time its why even a low clocked quadcore can out muscle a higher clocked dual in GTA IV because the extra threads truly help granted the game needs to be better threaded but what ppl forget is

The 360 and PS3 have a triple core IBM based Xenon 3.2ghz cpu so theres another reason why should a developer scale back for a dual when a console from 4 years ago already has a triple core cpu the game is a port but when the console its ported from has at least 3 threads that should tell you something

basically speaking a gpu cant process AI or in many cases physics calculations and a cpu can only crunch so much before frame rate suffers its why some games are cpu limited example Brothers in Arms hells highway and its why more cores help in GTA IV basically even if you have 2 monster cores example 2 strong guys 4 average guys in a day to day basis can get more work done so to speak and with much less exertion

The PS3 does not use the Xenon. The Xenon is also SMT capable, which means it can execute six execution threads at once.

the base for sonys cpu is same as the 360 its an IBM produced CPU thats really a triple core sony's implementation is different but the base of there implementation is the same

both the cell and the xenon are based on the powerpc arch and while the implementations are different there still essentiall the same comparable in a sense to say an athlon x2 3800+ 4800+ and 5800+ same arch but different lvls of functionality they may have less cache or clock speed etc etc but at the center of it all the 2 cpus are the same base architecture manufactured by IBM but its all rather ridiculous because the Cell arch has been canned last i knew IBM shelved its development

not to mention the PS3 is far underpowered in terms of general computing ability (supposedly) as it has 8 SPEs but only 7 usable in the PS3 but 1 is reserved for the OS so only 6 are usable for games

anyway this is all off topic

point is if a console uses 3 cores and was made in 2005

why do ppl expect a dualcore to be a rival to it granted i realize that arch difference mean something but for sake of argument a console has greater then 80% optimization at best on a PC u might see 50% so 3 cores at 80% vs 2 at 50% and you can see why in a sense GTA IV runs like crap on anything less then a triple core because in reality making a game magically be that well optimized on trillions of configurations is impossible

so for recap its not that GTA IV is unoptimized its just actually using hardware at its disposal probably not to the best it could but it does so none the less phenom II 940 i get 20fps on 1 core 29fps on 2 cores 36fps on 3 cores and 44fps on 4 cores with clock speed and nb speed showing a performance increase with each bump

Any recent FPS game will show increases with a quad. I saw 60-70% use on my old E6420 at 3.2Ghz playing COD MW online with everything maxed out. The more players that got on the server, the more frame rate would sag. Moved over to a Q9400, problems went away and frame rate greatly stabilized.

This is only one example.

true its on for all apps but the affinity thing can also fix old games that dont run properly on modern hardware in terms of cpu requirements and granted most of the games above will use threads on there own except with the core optimizer that was created for supreme commander and its standalone expansion force it to do so eitherway try it yourself run a game and alt tab force it to use 1 core then 2 then 3 and watch how it performs games like GTA IV will show you full well that each core makes an impact

The Core Maximizer goes thread by thread and forces them to a single core preventing a single core from getting overburdened and/or the kernel tampering with their affinity. It is correcting a bug the developers overlooked.

thats gt90 for clearing that up either way it fixes the issue and makes the game run buttery smooth on a quad
