The Vertex is a good choice. Good performance, no glaring issues or anything like that. I would definitely recommend it.

why not get another 80 and raid 0 them so you can nearly double your read speeds? Or does that not work so well w/ ssds yet?

it works but in my experience, my drives are now limited by everything else... my internet speed, my other hard drives, my optical drives, etc. technically you can raid but unless you have software that is constantly accessing the hardrive in large volumes, more size is of more value than extra speed at this point.

I was considering doing that for my own build, but was told that currently if you put two SSD's in RAID you can't use TRIM which keeps your SSD from degrading over time. Has that changed recently?

nope trim isn't supported in raided ssds...yet.
