HD5870... To what price will it bottom???

We know that the previous generation 4870 went down as low as 150$. Was wondering, since the RV870 isn't much bigger than the RV770XT that the price of an HD5870 might drop dramatically when the fermi cards get to market. If the cards get below 300$, I'm in! That's how much I paid for my 4890 last summer in CAD, and now the 4890 is around 200 USD.

I think toward the end of the year the 5830 might actually be less than $200 (around $180), the 5850 starting around $220, and the 5870 starting at just under $300. That's kind of around fall and the holiday season though. They'll remain pricey through summer. Part of this depends on two things though 1) Fermi's prices and 2) The 6000 series release.

I saw a new 5870 at $340 AR, so it's going to drop a decent amount. I would say around $300 and then less with MIR's and such.

HD5870 and 5850 will drop back to $349 and $259 respectively after Fermi came out for 3 weeks or a month. It will stay at that price until there's something new come out that would replace its place.

The price points of the 5770 and 5750 should drop to 120/100 over the summer.

Are there still issues making the chips in 40nm? Because if there is, then there might still be availability issues and the prices might not fall down as we might think, or at least will take quite a while!

EDIT: Oh and let me correct myself, as of what's written in the wikipedia, the RV770XT is 256mm2 die size while the Cypress XT is 334mm2 in size, so costs much more to produce. Sorry for the confusion there.

Every card however powerful or costly will eventually go down in price. Now I wonder how low the gtx295 will sell in a few years (I would like to test it!)

Maybe the HD 5870 will come down to about $300 to $350 I assume because right now it's at an all time high of $439.99. Way overpriced.

If I am not mistaken and looking at ATI's past, I can see early releases of 28nm based HD 6000's coming out just to test the waters B4 the big boys are released. IMO

acording to amd 5830 will go EOL before dropping below $230. and same with the 5850 and 5870 they will go EOL before dropping much below what the MSRP is for them then sure they will drop but no one will want them because the 6 series will be out and everyone will be waiting for them to drop in price. in short if your waiting for price drops you will be waiting a while, and even after fermis launch things really wont change.

judging by the gtx 480 not-so-stellar performance and probably price (around $600) AMD probably wouldn't even need to change prices unless they just wanted to decimate nvidia.

You can't really get those though. The lowest priced cards, particularly those much under 400, are out of stock like 90% of the time.

na newegg just had a sale on a the HIS 5870 as did ewiz and didn't sell out on the egg the sale is just over.

i bought my HD 4870 for $124, free shippin last year. Powercolor PCS+, great stock cooler and c'd ok, never went above 54 celcius.

as for HD58XX series. I'd say even if the GTX 470 just matches or is slightly worse than the HD 5850 and the GTX 480 is betwen the HD 5970/870 at $300/$479? that ATI will drop the HD 5830 to $209-$219($239 cheapest avail), HD 5850 to 269-279($309 cheapest avail), HD 5870 $359-379($409 cheapest avail). ATI would still make money off their chips, and it would help block out nvidia dam near completely except for the die hard nvidia supporters.

indeed, AMD have had a nice 6 month run of easy profits, they could probably reduce the prices by 50% and still profit nicely. At that point it's RIP nvidia.

Yeah i think AMD will hold solid on prices even after GTX4xx comes out. Even if they drop prices I can't ever justify spending over $250 for 1 freaking video card. Hell when I built my rig in July of '09 I paid $170 for my 4890 and that thing freaking rocks, especially overclocked. It runs Crysis and BC2 damn well. I may grab another 4890 eventually but since Im stuck on base for a month before I can use my desktop only to have to go out to California, Florida, Georgia, and then North Carolina I wont get to use my rig for like a year and a half. Even so, I cant justify a 58xx or GTX 4xx card. They are just overkill unless you are playing over 1920x1080. Has to be a good value.

We could be wrong though. Maybe AMD will drop 5xxx prices just to torture Nvidia or because 6xxx is coming out soon. I'm down for competition, the consumer always wins!

i seriously hope ATI go for the torture option. They're ahead right now, but Nvidia still has a much larger portion of the market share. ATI needs to lower prices regardless of Nvidia's performance so they can gain market share, taking a chunk of nvidia's.
