Toshiba Laptop CPU fan overheating

Hello there,

Around three years ago, I purchased a Toshiba x205 Satellite laptop from Bestbuy. I would say after a few years, I noticed a fan running loud. The noise I am hearing is located at the top right side of my laptop. I am not sure if it is my CPU fan or not, since I do not have a diagram of my computer to tell. I have downloaded Speedfan to see if my CPU fan was overheating, and the temperature begins at 56c and increases steadily to 75c.

I do not play any heavy games on here, it is simply used for internet access. I recently installed Windows 7, but this problem with the CPU fan has been going on for quite sometime. Is there a diagram of this laptop so I can get a view of the internal contents? I would like to resolve this problem, because the laptop often becomes worm to the touch, and the fan spins for a long period of time as soon as I turn my computer on. It continues even when the computer is idle.

Starting simple, have you ever shot some air into the vents to see if there is a bunch of dust clogging the heatsink?

Probably the fans are clogged with dust, etc. Get a can of air and blow them out; first when shut down then again lightly after booting. If you can open the case its even better, because you can also check the fans to make sure they are ok.

Yes, I have tried to clean the fans with a can of air. I have taken it in to get it cleaned as well, but the noise still remains. Is there directions online of how to open the laptop to clean inside?

X205 what? Need the complete model number and I can probably find a link for the disassembly instructions

First post has a link to a dissasembly guide for the X205 from Rapidshare. I would scan that with an antivirus program before opening it to be safe

Also, it turns out that the x205's have overheating issues due to poor quality thermal paste. Changing that could also solve the issue, but thats a bit more detailed. The chipset seems to be the biggest problem with overheating on that model.

The fan could be on its way out. Other than that the thermal paste failing.

If that fan were going to fail I would imagine it would be running slower and sound noticeably bad (grinding, screeching, rubbing, etc) its most likely the thermal paste or pads as suggested. Its not too bad to change though.

I once took apart my laptop without looking up any guides at all. Just make sure you get every single screw and ease things out gently, it's all very straightforward really. Get some thick thermal paste like Arctic Cooling MX-3 and you'll be good to go.

I have torn a lot of laptops apart over the years. The way I do it, take pictures. If you have a digital camera or a phone with one, snap a pic of each step you do. Remove the screws and lay them out as they came out of the machine, snap a pic and so on. It will only come apart and go back together one way. Once you get in there you will see they are very easy to strip down and reassemble. Its like a 3D jigsaw puzzle.

While it is noticeable, there is no grinding or whining. I do not believe this is normal, so I will probably have to take it in, since I know nothing about disassembling laptops of any kind. I just hope they don't tell me there is nothing wrong again.

Around 3 years..)) Clean your laptop with a vacum cleaner and you will see the result. Or may be thermopasta soiled?

I would be very careful where I take that laptop with that issue as thats the type of issue that the big guys rip you off for.!!!!!!!!!!! You'd be better off mailing it to a TPU member for repair than say like Bestbuy, or office depot.

Once I took apart my laptop. Never fixed it back, there were 20+ screws and a lot of details to get everything back. Lucky it was a dead HP one.
