9600GT -> 2 x HD5670 CF, worth the (low) price ?

Would you crossfire two HD5670 if you were in my shoes ?

A friend of mine has a Sapphire HD5670 512MB and wouldn't mind trading it for my Gigabyte GF9600GT with a passive cooler since the HD5670 doesn't have analog TV output and he needs it. I sure don't mind since the HD5670 is a notch faster than the 9600GT and eats less power.

Now I'm thinking of picking up another Sapphire HD5670 512MB on the cheap and running a pair in crossfire. Normally I'd never do that, since a single HD5770 would make more sense, but here one of the cards exists already and it would be a rather cheap performance upgrade for my 2nd rig which runs a 1680x1050 monitor.

Would you crossfire HD5670s if you were in my shoes ?

yeah, i wouldnt expect mind shattering performance, but it would be quite a bit faster than the 9600GT.

As you said, i'd rather get a better performing card than two lower end ones, but this could be a cheap upgrade for your second machine.

The way I look at it you have 3 options;

Buy another 9600GT.
OR
Trade + buy a 5670.
OR
Don't do anything

A a pair of 9600GT's are certainly still very capable cards BUT finding another 9600GT wont be too easy.....plus a pair of 5670's would be faster and use less power.

You can also have the experience and fun of playing around with some new tech if you pick option 2. :)

Personally, for a second PC that sees rare use, I'd do the swap and not go Crossfire.....whats the point in spending more on another 5670 to have it go to waste by sitting idle...besides, you have a nice main rig any way and shouldn't be gaming on anything else. :)

he's using it on his second PC, which can do crossfire but not SLI.

Yes, but the second rig is at my parents' place where I spend quite a few weekends, and the 9600GT is starting to be a wee bit slow on its own (And the swap to a HD5670 won't help much). That's why I am looking into upgrading the second rig on the cheap.

I can SLI with the workaround, actually. And I've been thinking about a second 9600GT, but a pair of HD5670s would make more sense in the current situation I think.

It's OK, I forgive you. :roll:

In that case, I'd look at either selling the 9600GT or the 5670 you swap for (whatever is worth more, ATI I would think) and look for a cheap 4870 or 5770 (this may be a little expensive still).

They both will give you more than enough power at that res, take my girlfriends rig at the moment with a 1GB 4870....not even Crysis gives it an issue @ 1650x1080 with all the details on High so I think you'd be fine. :toast:

Looking at the performance summary, it seems that 5670CF will perform about the same as a 5750/5770, so I would say its reasonable.

Obviously a HD 5770 would be a better choice, but not necessarily in your case.
Here’s why, in some cases it’s slightly faster than the HD 5750 but beats the GeForce GT240 most of the time.
When you setup 2 x Crossfire for HD 5670, it’s equal or blows the doors of a single HD 4870 card. Not bad for CrossfireX performance. You seem to get large performance improvement when going Crossfire with such a low end card, we're talking almost double the performance.

So to assert your situation a bit further, here is a great review on HD 5670 in and out of Crossfire X. Impressive IMO especially when this Crossfire setup is 1 or 2 FPS slower than the HD 5870 1GB card in some games.

Because the 5670 is half of a 5770 and a quater of a 5870. :p
Just get a 5770 and be done with it.

Dual HD5670s should be an interesting choice and I wouldn't be surprised if the crossfire setup turns out faster than a HD5770 in some situations, because of the higher combined bandwidth.

I say get the second HD5670 and have fun overclocking them to oblivion.
You should be able to do ~850MHz core and ~1050MHz memory without a sweat (through CCC) -> at these speeds it should come very close to a single HD5770 @ default speeds.

Just make sure you get a GDDR5 version.
