New Monitor Advice, LED LCD or just LCD?

I need some new monitors, (2 actually) and I need advice. I will be gaming on one of them and the other will be dedicated for my server/Linux box. I narrowed it down to these, I kinda want to keep my desk organized so I prefer 2 of the same type. Any suggestions?

Is the picture much better with LED LCD over standard LCD or is that just another gimmick also 5ms response time enough for gaming?

The backlight has very little effect on picture quality. It's the panel type you should be worried about. Cheap TN-film panels will always be inferior to *VA and IPS panels, LEDs or no LEDs.

Response time is a fairly moot point these days, pretty much all LCDs are plenty fast. Contrast ratio is indeed important, but numbers can be decieving. Try looking up some reviews on the monitors, or even more ideal, go look at them in person if you have the opportunity.

A good site to do some reading up is TFT-Central, with a little luck you can find an in-depth review of those monitors or monitors that use the same panel.

Thank you, do you figure gaming will be an issue using smaller monitors? Most review sites I find test at 1920X1080 or 1650X1080. 18.5 inch monitors seem to be natively 1440X900. I am guessing smaller monitors mean they are going to be 1080p.

I would go larger, some people notice big difference in panel types, I have always just bought the largest monitor I could and never regretted it. I don't think I would ever look to a 19" monitor now, I suggest looking to at least 22" if you got the money.

I do but its a matter of space, I need 2 monitors on my desk, 1 for my server and the other for gaming machine/Windows Box. Larger monitors support 1080p but I am not sure if that means much for pc gaming. I already have a Samsung 2253BW LCD.

My sons 19" Samsung LCD (720p) developed a fault (a roof leaked on it, but I didnt tell Argos that lol) and when I returned it they didnt have anymore in stock. So, because the Samsung was originally in the end-of-line sale I had to settle for another LCD TV in the £150 price range.

They had a 19" LED LCD Bush (yeah, I know) on sale from £200 down to £150 so I settled for that, and do you know what? My son loves it. The LED backlight gives the picture a nice vibrant look to it.

1080p is meaningless for pc-gaming, as pc-games support a wide variety of resolutions. 1080p/720p-support can be important if you want to hook up a console though. Concerning the 2 monitors: I used 2 for a server/gaming-pc combo for a while, but grew tired of it. Remote desktop is far more useful in my opinion and it would allow you to buy 1, larger monitor. If that's at all possible, I'd go with Kurgan's suggestion and get the largest one you can afford.

Its possible, I have one and I game on it, just be sure to sit 4-5' back from the screen so you don't mess up your eyes
