Performance is very close but the 5850 has DX11....

Unless DX11 and using less power are really important to you, I don't think there would be a big enough difference in performance to warrant an upgrade. Plus you've already got your x2 blocked and cooled. I say wait for the next gen.

Bad idea, unless you intend to crossfire two 5850's.
I don't think you'd get any performance increase at all.
Perhaps just higher IQ in dx11 titles.

The following comparisons were done by W1zzard on TPU's review at stock clocks.

i had the 4870x2. then i went for 2x5770, wich wasnt an upgrade, it was more to get a lower power draw, and less heat and noise.

and now im sitting with a 5850,
i wouldnt have bought the 5850 if it wasnt because i wanted to do crossfire in the near future

so unless you wanna save some money on your powerbill, get less heat or dx11, then i would just keep the 4870x2, it is still a VERY powerfull card

and if you dont have any problems with the games you play then why change card;)

I had 2x 4870s - same thing basically.

yeah performance is statistically a little better on those, but i switched to one 5850 and was completely satisfied. the only reason i got a second for XFire is for eyefinity, on 1080p a single one ran all my games great.

BC2, just cause 2,and a a few others worked better with the 5850 than they had with the 2 4870s.

Is it worth switching for a WARRANTY?

i guess my question is
Is it worth switching for a WARRANTY?

no?

you either use your current cards with no warranty until they die, or you upgrade and get a warranty on your new card. either way your current x2 will be out of warranty.... meaning no matter what your x2 will die eventually and that'll be that. the only difference is when you spend the money on a new card.

unless you are planning on a flood or fire, getting a new card solely for the warranty makes no sense.

if you do go that route, try and sell your x2 first. but as i see it you are not needing the power, so an upgrade is unnecessary.

since my current card has no warranty. i am wodering if i sell it then buy a card with a warranty instead of waiting til card dies [who knows when] assuming i break abiut even $ wise

yeah, that's what i was thinking. i would do that, and i actually did sell my 4870s to pay for my 5850... but it was because i wanted new hardware and more power, not a warranty.

that being said if you can make 3/4 of the cost back with the sale, why not? 58xx are awesome pieces of hardware.

I agree with that statement, If you can re-coop 3/4 of the money by selling the 4870X2 then go ahead and do it, but do not expect any "Holy wows" when you switch over to the 5850!:toast:

You can also expect to see your 3DMark06 score fall though the floor with the 5850. If you're into benching keep the X2 for E-PEEN. The 5850 is better for actually gaming IMO.

I have the ATI 4870X2 and am wondering if switching to ATI 5850 would be a good idea?
thank you

It's throwing money.
Here in Croatia used HD4870x2 worth around US$ 250 max and new 5850 is US$350 so if you want to sell old vga then maybe it could be a good deal.

I swear to god himself.. Ive been sweating furiously for the past few hours in my room.. I swear im about to go turn on the central AC even though my roomate wants to wait til next month! Power bills in leesburg in the winter avg $300/350 and damn near $550 in the summer with AC 24/7..

the good thing about the 5000 series is low power draw and low heat.

Earlier today i swear it was 78-80 in my room and my gpu temp on this 5870 was 74c after 2 hours of GPU load.. i love it. and i only run my fan at about 33% max to keep it quiet.

and idle is icing on the cake

as im typing this im literally sweating from this hot room. going to turn the ac on!! i wanna see how much the AC will lower my temp if any.
