AMD is planning a major update for the ATI Radeon HD 5670 mainstream graphics card. Currently based on the 40 nm Redwood core with specifications which include 400 stream processors, 512 MB / 1 GB of GDDR5 memory across a 128-bit wide memory interface, the updated HD 5670 will be based on the larger Juniper core (on which are based HD 5750 and HD 5770). On the HD 5670, the Juniper will have 640 of its 800 stream processors enabled, while having the same memory interface of 128-bit GDDR5 @ 1000 MHz (4 GHz effective).

The core will be clocked at 750 MHz. Since the nomenclature remains the same, it is safe to assume that the price will be remain unchanged, around $90 for the 512 MB, and $110 for the 1 GB variant. Leading AIB partners such as PowerColor and Sapphire seem to be ready with their board designs which are essentially identical to those of their Radeon HD 5700 series products. Unlike the HD 5770 reference, the new HD 5670 will be able to make do without an additional PCI-Express power input. Looking purely at the specifications, the new HD 5670 will be able to perform on par with the Radeon HD 4770 in present applications, with the added DirectX 11 and hardware tessellation support. With CrossFireX connectors on some designs, these card will have the ability to pair with more than two of their kind. There is no word yet on the availability.

I wonder why, they can just release HD 5730 instead. This is like 60% bump in the number of shaders. Maybe there is a lot of defective Juniper cores that they need to get rid of and they don't want to compare it with the "failed" 5830?

If the price remains the same for these cards, then its a decent deal for XFire on the cheap.

Maybe AMD is trying to get ready for nVidia's new mainstream cards.
As we know the 4670 didn't stand much chance against the 9600GT which is at that time a gen old already.

There will be a few months where they need to list it as 640 shader but after a while there wont be any of the old one's.

Isn't nvidia renowned for renaming. All they did here was increase the number of shaders so your either going to get what you'd have got in the first place or something better. It will say on the product page 640 shaders.

Ahh, but Team Green just rebranded same spec cards. At least these have 640 shader attached to them as opposed to minor clockspeed and mem speed increases.

Dr Pepper u beat me too it!!

PS. I think they should have called it a 5690 due to the diff specs

yeah, same like what they do with GTX 260(and i like it that way), but at least they upped the spec.

it's not like average joe will complain when they accidentally pick up 640 SP one.(but it will sure piss some user that recently bought it, but that the PC system are, u never know when something better comes out)

I never got why nVidia caught so much hell. They both do this kind of shit, and it is completely idiotic. ATi was doing similar last generation too, but no one seemed to care, it was all about nVidia is evil talk.

ATi has had thier share of rebrands. There is the x1300XT ATi rebranded to an x1600Pro, or the x300SE rebranded to an x1050. Just to name a few off the top of my head.

Isn't nvidia renowned for renaming. All they did here was increase the number of shaders so your either going to get what you'd have got in the first place or something better. It will say on the product page 640 shaders.

The only time you didn't get what you would have got in the first place, or something better with nVidia was with the 9600GSO when they switched to using the G94 core, and cut the shaders down to 48.

Ahh, but Team Green just rebranded same spec cards. At least these have 640 shader attached to them as opposed to minor clockspeed and mem speed increases.

Dr Pepper u beat me too it!!

There is more to it then just an increase in shaders. Using a totally different core means crossfire becomes confusing. I made this argument last generation when ATi did this. You are supposed to be able to crossfire any card from the same series with any other card from that series(e.g. any HD4700 with any other HD4700). However, with ATi using a different GPU core, that goes out the window. So now, people who buy an HD5670 today, and pick another one up in 6 months, won't be able to crossfire time...how stupid is that? And it doesn't help the matter than ATi still has updated their crossfire combination chart to include the different HD4700 cards so people know what you can and can't crossfire together.

I'm more worried that people will go out and expect a 640sp model, but instead get some old stock of 400sp ones...Some suppliers can be very sneaky.

Yeah right. they sure need to change the name. Maybe like the GTX 260.

Good thing that it will match the 4770 at reasonable cost.Cant wait to see it in the field.

Most of what I think has been said already.

Having the exact same name isn't a good idea. If it's a significant difference, it needs another name. I don't know what's so hard about this concept to understand. So many companies don't do this. :shadedshu

This should be named a 5730. It's based on the Juniper core, so it belongs in the Juniper series. (imo)

I am glad that AMD is doing this. The Redwood 5670 was a real dissapointment.

This is all wrong. They still haven't gotten the 5670 down to the price point where it replaces it's predecessor at $65-80. Now this change is likely to increase the price. Even if amd doesn't increase the costs for the board partners they're likely to milk it for more on their own.

Didn't AMD previously state that the 5 series would get a refresh? Perhaps this is the beginning of it.

Yeah you are right, i was thinking about a refresh about the 5770. So after all they will match up from one to another, like 5750 to 5770 and so on...

Ugh, this is going to confuse the hell out of customers, especially if they try to crossfire. I'm not saying this is a bad move but the naming is awful. You just can't change something like after a few months! BUT nothing is set in stone and hopefully if we're all vocal enough about this then hopefully AMD will notice and listen. I remember last year when AMD was going to release an RV790GT based video card and it was going to be called the Radeon HD 4790. EVERYBODY thought this idea was bad because it was confusing (the card is more powerful than the 4830 and 4850) so due to pressure they changed the name to the Radeon HD 4860. Also Nvidia was going to name their 400 series Fermis 300s but they even stated themselves, that last minute they decided to make the 300s OEM due to the confusion over the G310 and GT320.

Also I don't think this card should be called the 5690. As it is the existing 5600 series cards are Redwood based, since this card is based on the Juniper I think 5730 would be a better name.
