i thought there was always a post count requirement. anyway, there should be a 50 post minimum + 2 weeks subscription like almost all of the other tech sites do.

I agree with this, even though I'm a low poster. But then I'm more of a learner than a teacher.

Are there any plans for changing the criteria to make a [FS] thread or is it open to suggestion?

I don’t want to post crap to get my post count up.

+1 Wish everyone thought that...

On the subject of sotware, NO software left on a HDD is to be sold for a higher price (UK (and I would imagine everywhere else) law).
If you have a HDD/SSD with software on, you can't charge more for it than if you formatted it (you can do this via PM, but you will still be breaking the law).
Even if it's i.e. a Steam game that you paid for that is on an OS'd HDD ready to play.
Or GPU-Z.
and before anyone says it, ESPECIALLY open source.
Charging MORE for a HDD with games/open source/software on would mean that you are charging for software. Read EULA's as they supercede (are more important to follow than) TPU's guidelines. They will tell you that you can't do this!

higher post count shows that a member is in good standing and is a part of the community. i am far more willing to buy from somebody that has 1000 posts than somebody who has less than 100. (not that it means the dude with only 100 posts is a crook. just saying.) i doubt there will be any big changes made unless w1z has something up his sleeve.

My existence (and Urlyin's) proves you wrong there :p I have never buy or sell anything through TPU (or indeed, anyone off the interwebz). But its a good indicator though.

I think one of the things that makes TPU's B/S/T forum attractive is the fact that you don't need a post count to use it. We are plenty strict with other rules and guidelines we have in place. Any sort of "incentive" to bring members on board to TPU is a good thing.

Yes, I can vouch. TPU has many incentives, that's why I've stayed here... People can mistake the incentives for a weakness sometimes, but Mr. Infraction is always waiting with the crab claw

i am far more willing to buy from somebody that has 1000 posts than somebody who has less than 100.

Definately. As W1zzard said:

QUOTE:
W1zzard
There are also jerks who register, sell their stuff, and then we never hear from them again.
END QUOTE

People shouldn't come here just to sell stuff, that's what ebag's for. The difference is, here, people can see all of your previous helpful and kind hearted posts, and then scam who they think is easiest. With a, say, 100 post quota, there's a good chance you'll get an idea of the seller's personality/attitude before trading with them. Plus a real man(/woman) will get hooked to TPU by 30 posts and forget about making a [FS] thread altoghether!
Seriously though, I love TPU's leniancy on trading, but on the flip side I'm also up for a heightening of trading criteria. Not intrusive or restrictive. Something like, TPU's own "Trader Feedback" tab in the Public Profile section. Would do away with duplicate feedback accounts?

i dont think w1z has ever said he wants to attract people to tpu to buy and sell stuff. it is simply a service that is provided.

Well, it gets people to come here. Once they are here the possibility of them contributing to the forum is always there and welcomed. Just my opinion anyways, I don't speak for W1zzard.

I think the other rules that we have are better than a minimum posts rule. We are one of the few forums that doesn't have a general nonsense-type forum that counts towards that post count, and having a minimum makes people want to spam in order to reach that post count.

Buyers/sellers are always at their own risk, and that's why I'm so glad we have heatware as a requirement. That way, everybody can make their own judgement as whether or not they should buy/sell from/to a person.

I thought there was a minimum post count of 14?

That's being a member for 14 days before you can post in the B/S/T section, sorry. That said, I don't think there is a minimum post count. I'm sure I've seen people post in the B/S/T forum whilst having less than 14 posts.

Absolutely right on.

This post certainly will not make me popular with the "powers that be" here, but at least you can count on me to be honest, not a suck-up. The following is not an accusation or complaint against anyone, just something to remember when making rules and generally interacting with the community:

It's easy when one is given power, to get pulled into a "we provide this service for you, get out if you don't like something about it" power-tripping attitude. Sure, the BST section (and indeed TPU itself) could be called a "service provided," but a lot of people upon running into that attitude will say "fine then," and go patronize a forum that is more friendly toward its members.

If you want a forum/site to get good web site rankings, or generate decent ad revenue, or want to be an admin/mod in a place that actually matters (otherwise you're just the biggest fish in a small pond), or just want there to be an active community here among a number of other possible motivations, you have to listen to the site/forum's community and accept the fact that it is nothing without its members. That doesn't mean bending over backwards for every request or letting anything go; it means understanding that not only do members have something to gain from TPU; TPU and its staff have something to gain from its members.

I don't mean to go off on a tangent; I post this because like I said, it's important to keep these things in mind when making rules and generally interacting with the community.

As an active trader on this forum and many others, I can say from a personal perspective that TPU is a lot friendlier to buyers and sellers than some of the other sites. The sites like [H], XS, AT and others have mods that are pissy and beligerant to those that don't follow the rules, and sometimes the mods themselves don't follow the rules (combining threads when the rules clearly state you can have one FS thread and one WTB). At TPU, the mods are matter-of-fact about the way they put it, and they treat everyone by the same standard. Even I have had FS threads closed for no pics, etc., and so have other staff.

There are other lesser sites where I can throw stuff up without any proof of what I am selling, and the mods never interact with the members. And I know nothing on those sites sell, and the traffic sucks there, too.

This is really common sense, though it is a burden that the mods and admin have to work through and balance all of the time. We honestly work hard to find the "sweet spot" of protecting the forum and creating a friendly and open environment. If you guys only knew how much time and energy we spend doing this...

I completely agree, t_ski. One of the reasons I haven't even reached 50 posts in some other forums to list yet, and right now pretty much post FS threads on here and Craigslist.

About the discussion on post count... I find a small post rule useless, because all they will do is spam, and a big post count to post in BST too restrictive. At the end of the day, the buyer/seller decides who he wants to trade with, so he should protect himself.

We had a small discussion on this, which actually changed my mind http://forums.techpowerup.com/showthread.php?t=120940&page=3

Thank you. I now got my very own WTB thread. I know these forums are very helpful, but I was still surprised how quickly people helped me. So thank you again. I shall keep lurking in the shadows, and time to time practice my English, when I have something meaningful to say.

Hey, I was wondering whether or not simply having a link to your Heatware in your signature is enough? Do we still have to have it in the FS/FT post?

I am just curious... My FS thread just disappeared... I was not aware of any violations and I read and tried to follow every rule to the "T". Where would I find out what happened?

Yes, the database from yesterday was lost. You will have to create a new thread.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

No images are to be included in bumps. They are there to make sure your thread doesnt get buried in the for sale forum, not to get attention with scantily clad ladies.

Interesting change to the rules without any announcement.....

Soooooo.......now we're not allowed to have a little fun with images that don't break the rules anywhere else at TPU that may bring an eye or two to our threads, including a potential buyer? Not sure what to think about this one. People have been using scantily clad girls to sell stuff since the first caveman was selling the wheel. Why rock the boat here?

Was there a terrible outcry? Would you prefer scantily clad dudes?

noticed pretty fast, it was.

the B/S/T section of the forum is not for fun, or messing around. you want to bump your post? sure, go for it. but dont bother doing it with pictures of half naked ladies.

oh and as to the objection to the half naked ladies? we know from experience here on TPU, that it just goes on and on, until someone eventually breaks the rules - and then we just get crap tons of it (hot girls thread version 1, good example)

This was not a major ruling, or something i even expected controversy over, tbh.
