i just made an astonishing discovery that toothpaste(!) is really good substitute for thermal interface material!!!

my CPU is running on it and at max load its giving 5"C above ambient!!

copper grease can work, but you may as well just order some online and be done with it

besides 5c over ambient isn't overly bad.

yeah i used toothpaste once when i couldnt find my thermal paste. It doesnt work as well lol... but toothpaste and cooking oil work well.

On my behalf i'm a well self-made car mechanic who learned from the hard way. I got some pretty nice tricks to repair old junk cars that I can transfer to computers. Lubricating gel for brakes pads are heat resistant and resist to lot of heat sometimes like 3000F ...far enough for your CPU lol. Spark plug wires boot grease. Can withstand the heat of 100 000V ignition spark and dont cook in place. 3$ a tube at auto parts store.

Myth, period.
Tooth-paste is not a very good thermal grease, for long term at least. OC is not a option either.
To see if the PC can power on and no regular grease is around, sure...why not, but to run it for more than a few minutes, I won't recommend it.
Also, I think it corrodes the components.

P.S.: I've never tried it. I basing my comments on stuff I've read.
