What's most important to you with regards to GTX 460?

Given that the $199 - ~ $240 price point is such an important one to gamers as it is so popular, it seems that the upcoming release of the GTX 460 is going to be fairly important to NVIDIA fans and general hardware enthusiasts alike.

This card could turn out to be a hit, or a miss.

There are several factors to consider if one is interested in this card.

• Performance vs. other cards near its price point (HD 4890, HD 5830, GTX 260, GTX 275, GTX 465)
• PhysX performance
• Folding performance
• Power consumption
• Noise
• Heat
• SLI scalability
• Antialiasing performance
• 3D Vision/Surround Gaming
• Driver quality
• Overclockability
• CPU scaling (or lack of)
• Build quality

There are bound to be plenty of you in this hardware community who could be interested in the GTX 460. In the event that you are, what's most important to you? What will these cards need to excel at for you to actually push the "Add to my Cart" button?

I'm just interested in seeing what the expectations are of this upcoming release.

SLI. imo SLI is a make or break deal. If they cant scale over 60% then buying the next cad up will out perform both cards and be cheaper than 2 460's. because the next step up will scale either way. if it scales worse it doesnt matter because their more powerfull. If they scale better you get more bang for buck and the cards dont reach their niche meaning they dont sell.

for me it would be the ability to run dx11 games being that is the only thing it will have on former chipsets, but that goes for all dx11 cards for me right now. It either has to be faster than all prior chipsets or it has to be able to run dx 11 games without issue. based on metro2033and the heaven benchmark it's not looking so good for the midrange dx11 lines.

I'd need to see that a gtx460 could run a decent dx11 title at 1680x1050, then it would be a nice contender, because we already know that the gtx260, gtx275, hd 4870, hd 4890, and etc can run almost all dx10 titles at that resolution.

Cypress cards are still being sold for more than their MSRP, 10 months after their launch.
The same for Juniper and Redwood.

I've never seen graphics hardware prices stagnated for so long, and the problem is an obvious lack of competition.


So for me, it would be nice if this GF104 were to match the HD5850 in game performance. That's what I'd like this card to be, but it's obviously not going ot happen.
I guess we're all still suffering from TSMC's screw-up with 40nm (took them 2 years to go from 55 to 40nm). Let's hope TSMC and GF's execution is a bit better with 28 and 32nm.

I totally agree after selling the 5850 I had since launch with a profit about 2 months ago. Currently trying to find a dirt cheap midranger and I can't, where I found a dirt cheap 4850 pretty soon after launch.

You were not around with G80? And to a lesser extent with Ati R300?

As to the OP performance is what I most care about and price, but I do know the price is going to be around $200 so all I care right now is that it performs.

R600 came out 6 months after G80 and, despite being a performance disappointment, it was priced quite aggressively ($400) and made the 8800GTX go down from its initial MSRP of $600 to $500 or less.

The R300 was never sold above its MSRP. In fact, a couple of weeks after its launch, the Radeon 9700 Pro was already being sold some $80 below its MSRP (I know because I had one ordered from U.S. when it came out).



The Cypress cards have been in the market for 10 months and they're still priced above their 10 month-old MSRP. It's almost ridiculous.

Scaling can be a lot of different things even when talking about graphics cards..

But scaling for multi-card setups is how much performance you get from adding the extra card.

Scaling refers to the performance you gain by adding up another GPU.

For example

nVidia XXX gets a 100 frames per second in Crysis.
But if you add another nVidia XXX card SLi it will boost up the FPS to 140.

So the perf. gain is 40%. Thats scaling.

It also refers to a card's performance delta going from one CPU to another. I'm not sure that there's really that much data out there that could determine whether certain GPUs do better CPU scaling that others though.
