Ahhh... Sleezbay. Was it new in the box? Or just new to you? I hope someone didnt pawn a defective card off on you. Chances are slim, but on ebay you never know.

I have had many more pos experience than neg on ebay, but I have been gurned bad a few times. I got my gfx card on ebay for a killer deal and it works great. Good luck to the op with this. I feel ya these things can be a pain to figure out sometimes.

The seller had barely used it because he said he didn't have time to game. Besides, wouldn't a computer still be able to turn on without a video card or integrated graphics card? (Although you would be extremely limited with its uses if you wanted to do anything at all.)

It's not just that video card, if you wanted to blame my video card, I suppose I should have also mentioned that after I tried to turn the computer on with the HD 5850 inside it didn't turn on and after I replaced it with the original temporary video card, and the computer still didn't turn on. Before all that happened, my computer was working fine. It may have had something to do with how I had to move and unplug/replug connectors, wires, and cables in my PC due to necessary adjustments to fit the video card into the case.

Im pretty sure that the new card did not caused what you are going through. My guess is it will turn out to be something really simple (wire pulled of, not connected). Let your person look at it and see what they find.

Okay thanks. I'm planning on giving my PC (with all the original stuff that was in it before I received the XFX Radeon HD 5850) and the video card (HD 5850) in its own box to him so he could analyze it and also clean some dust build up.

I never take grounding seriously, I've probably opened up the case of 5 computers over 50 times in the past 6 months and I've never properly grounded myself nor did I take any precautions in terms of preventing static electricity from harming my components. Nothing has ever died on me, ever.

I've seen a short though before, the computer simply would not start most of the time, and when it did, the mouse simply did not work. Truly bizarre... a wire I had tied managed to sneak lose somehow, I have no idea how, but a metal prong on this cable was touching something. One relocated cable later and it's been right as rain since.

Unless you're rubbing your sock covered feet on the carpet while building, I can't see how it's possible to fry anything. I usually just build over one of the boxes that the hardware comes in. If it comes in contact with anything its either my hand or cardboard. Hardware is more resilient than people give it credit for. One of my whackier escapades was with a heatsink. The plastic part that went on the back of the mobo had an adhesive on it when I first installed it. Over time it hardened into something similar in solidity to diamond. I really wanted it off for some reason but it was stuck too good so I cut into it with a steak knife then pried it off in chunks. It was kinda awesome.

But on topic, I'd imagine you'd simply get - nothing - if it was a grounding / shorting problem. No lights or anything. I'd try the most minimal boot you could possibly hope for. It may be worthwhile to try starting it outside of the case.

Does the PSU fan spin up? Does it do anything? Do you get any mobo POST code at all?

second this it sounds like you pulled out the power connector for the front panel power button. pull out you're board's manual and double check the location of it. Then you can either try a screwdriver to get it started or simply put the plug where it's supposed to be.

To the guys talking about grounding, do you mean when you're cleaning or removing parts from your computer?

Why don't you just unplug it to avoid shocks?

I dont know how far along you've got with finding the problem, but personally, i would just take everything apart and start from scratch.
Go barebones to start with and see if it powers up using the x300 se in your sys specs

+1 to that

I would build the PC on a desk with bare minimum of stuff connected plus short the startup pins with a screwdriver for example to get it going.

When I try to turn it on, nothing works. None of the fans spin, no sound comes out and the only thing alive is a green LED which is the BOOT_DEVICE_LED according to my motherboard manual in the onboard LEDs section.

I am taking the PC to a relative for him to analyze it this morning so I can't do much.

For now, I need help clearing some things out:
Questions

Should I register my XFX Radeon HD 5850 immediately for its lifetime warranty?
If a motherboard dies, will any of the onboard LEDs still work?
What are signs that a motherboard has died?
What are signs that a power supply has died?
What are signs that a processor has died?

You can test the power-supply in shorting 2 of its pins - be sure they are the right ones in pay attention to the direction of the power connector in the pic.

the fact that nothing spins or powers up at all indicate some sort of power issue to me.

the only way to check whats died imo, is use known working parts from a backup rig and replace what you think maybe blown. again, best to do this barebones.

I have had 1 powersupply die that way, Id rig up a connector switch for it.

I had the same symptoms once( just one light on my motherboard) and it was the fan/heatsink on the CPU was not aligned right on the CPU. I had to re-adjust the heatsink on the cpu for the computer to power up.
