WoW Cata Thread - You Got Questions, I Got Answers

I'm not sure if I will be playing yet, but the NDA has been lifted, and I do have beta access. So if people have questions, toss them up and I will answer them if possible.

What do you think of the major class reworkings?

For some classes it's great, like the ones that benefit a lot from going full into a tree, it won't change much for them. Like a Warrior, as any spec you basically want to hit the bottom of your tree, then move to another tree. Only thing it really changes is the fact that while leveling, you get Dual Wield and Bloodthrist sooner, or Mortal Strike and Two-Handed weapon spec, it makes oyu feel like a Fury, Prot, or Arms Warrior right at level 10, rather than feeling basically the same until your in your mid 50s.

But when I use to play Warlock I usually wouldnt make it to the bottom of any tree. In those situations it really sucks, because, I liked the top and midrange Demonologist talents, picked up spell power, and used them to make another tree better, did not like Metamorphosis. But now you would have to get that talent. It will make leveling easier for them too, but the end game your choices have been dumbed down signifigantly, and I think there will end up being even more cookie cutter builds. I use to follow what you would call cookie cutter, not because I copied it, because it was good, but I usually made my own few tweaks, most people wouldn't get it, but I always made it work, and it fit me, and I owned, doing something like that now will be a lot harder being locked in till you fill a tree.

I like that your class will feel more developed at level 10, and I like that for new players they lock you into one tree till you fill it, but I feel for advanced players they should be able to turn off the lock option and invest how they want.

this definetly needs to be optinal for players with a high level charactor already.... srsly how many new players are really just starting wow for the 1st time now?

this is somthing that should have been implimented right at the start of wow and then turned off around the 2nd or 3rd xpack.

can u use flying mounts everywhere now? or only restricted places within Kalimdor and the Eastern Kingdoms

Things will be changed in the trees, you now get Hunter Pets at level 1, and some other junk, spec defining moves are now given at level 10, so you might still have the points to get what you want, I don't have a Hunter that I can check on though.

And yes you can use them everywhere.

reduction in tallent points to 41? are they trying to go back to vanilla WoW?

The reduction is because talents that had previously been in the trees are now gone. For example, Dual Wield specialization, Bloodthirst (Old 31 Pointer), and the Hit Talent. you now get those basic at level 10 when you choose to be a Fury Warrior. The rest of the basic talents are there, and some classes/trees are getting a few new talents. And you now get 1 talent point every even level, and you learn 1 new ability every odd level.

thats kind of cool i guess, but i did like having a lot of points to work with, with the large trees.... i used to respec my toon SO often... more then twice a day just to give different builds ago (before dual spec).... was costing me 50g a pop in TBC... i dint play a LOT of the latest... i just lost interest.


maybe ill give catacysm ago... hopfully it will bring back what was missing.

One guy on MMOChamp posted screens with DX 11, atm what could be seen looked like full reflection on the water (characters, spells, which arent reflected in DX 9), and possibly tesselation.

I don't like that you can mix races and classes as you want. I like classes specific to race and side.

i wish they never let horde get paladins or alli get shamans it was nice having 1 class specific to your "team"...


now that its all mixed..... i dont know if i like it or hate it.

I've read most of the Warcraft books too (although I still haven't finished book 3 of War of the Ancients lol), as well as the "official lore" and it's quite plausible that the tauren would be able to choose to become Paladins. They have a sun-god as their primary deity, besides the earth-goddess. The former apparently has links to the Light.

Yep, DX11 is in, thats what I been running it in. Runs well, but there is a specific #0 crash that sometimes happens. You have to run wit the lowest 24bit selection. Only real difference from running DX11 is it seems to be the only DX mode that supports real reflections in water, DX10 might, but I haven't checked. Also the game now supports more than 1 videocard, but for your average player that isn't even going to matter. My 1055t at 3.3ghz only allows my 5850's to hit about 70% usage. So anyone with a quad or dual with dual videocards most likely will not be getting much use out of having the extra card, game still seems extremely CPU dependent.

The game still basically looks the same, the water makes a good difference, the biggest thing is, I believe in the current client your max view distance of foliage is 140 yards or something like that, from my testing in the split Barrens with a macro, the cap is now 500 yards... basically as far as the eye could see until grass is too thin to see.

Yes, theres a few places I haven't been yet, but been to most of them. Flying didn't feel all that strange as just helped me see things easier.

I haven't tried Goblins yet. Worgen lately are getting a lot of work, last week when I first tried one their animations were horrible. They are suppose to be the scarey race of Alliance and their attack animations seemed like a NE's, they would flip all over, looked like I was a dancing wolf, very horrible. But they fixed that and I like the new animations. People still don't think they look badass enough, so they once again went down for fixes. You currently can't make a Worgen, you can only play ones that were created before.

Should I wait for Cata before going from 70 to 80? I just got WotLK today.

Cata won't change anything from 70 - 80 Leveling as far as I know. It will only effect you from 1 - 60 then you go to BC till 70, then you go to WotLK till 80 (or 68 and 78 if you want), then back to Azeroth from 80 - 85 (or 78 - 85).

Haven't tried one yet, I havent checked if Molten Core is still there, I wanna see one in a T1 banana suit.

W1zzard I have great news for you! A new build came out today and...
* Experimental support for DX11 (can be enabled by passing ‘-d3d11’ on the command line or adding SET gxApi "d3d11" to the Config.WTF file).
* OpenGL Hardware Cursor support (can be enabled on the Video Resolution Panel).
* Improved water and lava rendering system (enabled by the Liquid Detail slider on the Video Effects Panel)
o 0 = Classic Water
o 1 = New Water (fake reflections)
o 2 = New Water (ocean has real reflection for terrain)
o These values are likely to change during Beta.
* Dynamic Sunshafts effect (enabled by the Sunshafts option on the Video Effects Panel).

Most of those boring passive bonuses are gone from the trees.
So those 5% crit from the MM tree is already gone, and so are those 3 points for range in SV.


I can tell you that the new talent tree model works much much better than the old ones.
Most of those passive stuff are becoming baseline, meaning you don't have to waste points in them anymore.

Those filler talents are never a real choice anyways, BM never had enough points for that extra range.
And I cannot possibily tell you how many times a talent in B tree gets nerf because A tree is specing into it and becomes OP.
eg. Bestial Wrath + Readiness = Nerf and BM was..... [Lich King]"Damned for ALL ETernity!"[/Lich King] in raids.

It is part of the lore, but this lore is written just to get Holy Cows in to existence.
