Rght, i'm in the market for a brand new PSU, preferably modular. i need it to power an Asus P5N-E SLI mobo, an Intel QX6800 (stock) CPU, a Geforce GTX 280, six HDDs, two opticals, a fan controller, and a Swiftech MCP 655. what would be the acceptable wattage for a system like this one? i used to have a 1.01kW that's becoming unstable under load.

Corsair hx750 would be acceptable and more than enough. Good extra room in case one day you decide to upgrade.

For future upgrading of CPU/MB/RAM/Video, I would definitely go with the Corsair HX850. I'm going to be running this on my next huge upgrade which will no question be high-end. And if your not convinced, check out a few reviews on it including hardwaresecrets review on the unit.

A good PSU wattage calculator

http://www.extreme.outervision.com/psucalculatorlite.jsp

I use an OCZ ModXtream PRO 600 Dual Rail (2 x +12V@25A rails) and ran two HDD's, two HD 4890 cards in crossfire, AMD 7850 OCed to 3GHz, DDR2 OCed to 4-4-4-12 timing and had lots of juice to spare.

PSU "recommmended" stuff is very over-rated provided you buy top brands from OCZ, Corsair, ect otherwise get an over-rated unit (cheap PSU's will nova fast from overheating if you run them near the max performance specs)

happy hunting

+1, especially if you intend to add another GTX 280 right away.

i'd to thank you all for your input especially for the link to the calculator. that's helped me a lot in determining the wattage for my PSU. i'll keep you posted as to what i get soon.

is there any advantage to having the 12V rail singularly handle all the amperage or having 4 separate 12V rails handling less, sharing the load?

honestly you only need bout 500watts for that build from a solid PSU. here's what i'd recommend Corsair 550watt, 50amp 12v not just bc it's corsair but for the wattage, it was the best rating along with free shipping.

EDIT: bit my tongue, forgot to include the 6 HDD....dam wtf do u need 6HDD for? are they small capacity or something? be more power efficient to upgrade to a 80 dollar 1tb or something if u are using smaller drives.

those 6 HDDS are massive drives, from 500GB to 2TB. 3 of them are WD Caviar Green, the other three are Maxtor and Seagate. they're used for storage.

ahh yes always the porn :p
i rip DVDs (legally, ones that i own) and i'm trying to set up a media storage bank so i can stream it to my netbook wirelessly. also, i have this tendency NOT to regularly back up my data, so the extra space comes in handy. of course it's a massive PITA when taking the time to back-up all the acculumated data over years of surfing.

as for the PSU, i'm leaning towards the Corsair HX850W.
