100Gbit ethernet will hit the market in 2010

The IEEE put together a study group to come up with an ethernet standard which will deliver up to 100Gbit. Even though home users don't even use 1Gbit and most servers can do with 10Gbit the IEEE feels that there is a market for 100GBit networking in 2010.
At first 100Gbit should go over fiber, however 100Gbit over ethernet might not be impossible either.
What the standard will look like remains yet to be seen. Untill then we should all be happy with 10Gbit.

there is no big server market for faster than gige .. it is cheaper to just buy more servers @ 100 mbit / 1 gbit each than to have one single point of failure that runs at 31337 mbit/s

telco equipment / backbones might be another thing, here they should focus on fiber because the existing infrastructures have that already

It's going to be a very very long time before any home user comes close to use 1gbit, let alone 100gbit. W1zzard's point was that there really isn't a market for it outside of telecoms. Individual servers running at 100gbit is just silly, as multiple machines running at 100mbit,1gbit,10gbit whatever is much more cost effective and redundant.

That's your internet connection yes. You, and thousands of others have 2.5Mbit, obviously an ISP for example needs to be able to handle 2.5MBit thousands of times at the same time. (not everyone uses full speed at the same time, I know there are more issues) so with internet speed increasing all the time ISPs need faster backbones. In 2010 this could be 100Gbit equipment. Just imagine all those 100Mbit users over fiber. A few thousand of those people running torrents could reach the limits of a 10Gbit backbone.

That's when the ISP will upgrade to multiple 1-10Gbit lines or get 100Gbit. In 10 years it'll be a Tbit/s. It won't stop anytime soon I bet. Because true HD holographic interactive TV in 2040 requires at least 3Gbit/s per user. (that's just some random bullshit to make a point)

Why do they say 10Gigabits/s??? Nobody looks at files in bits, we look at them in bytes. If you have 100Gbits/s of bandwidth, your max download speed is only 10.5 gigabytes every second. What a load of crap!

Hence the reason there going to start to incorperate it in 2010, alot can advance in 3 years. One example were i used to live in the majove dessert, they are all ready running fiber in mass tracking devlopments.

This isnt aimed at home use..... thats retarded. 10 base is still effective in home use...

However, running a network with around 900 pc's plus laptops... can actually use a little of this...

Just think of all the HD Movies you can torrent once this all gets up and running. I figure home use lags behind but we should hopefully see some benifit from ISP's. I know they recently put fiber in my area and are now offering 15/1 for $100 per month CND. I figure in a few more years it'll be half that

Nah, its going to stay closer to that for a long time...

Fiber is far from cheap. I've seen what it costs for time warner to run fiber from one area to another... Its upwards in the tens of thousands for about a quarter mile.
