Well looking at a $1700 config of it compared to some stuff on newegg I'd say you need to ask if orange and build quality is worth a $500 premium. Limited configuration choices, the hdd maxes out at 320 GBs and the only real options are double ram and double cores. Here's a comparative option with the same nice screen res but a better card, 500 gb hdd, and a quad. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220700

I'd say it's hard to pick which cpu is better. The standard TLX comes with a 2.4 GHz dual. The asus has a 1.6 quad. Adding a quad to the TLX ups it $250. Odds are the display panels are from the same supplier. And honestly that asus isn't styled that badly in comparison to the rendered TLX either.

I've looked into this with laptops before and it never seemed like it'd be any cheaper or better quality to build you own... in fact it seemed a lot of the parts were pretty hard to find and when you did were always insanely expensive.

Gamma Tech laptops packaged by Systemax are the best laptops I ever touched--reasonable price too (compared to Panasonic Toughbooks). My SR-15 is over 2 years old now and it still looks like new. Magnisum composite + rubber > cheap plastics.

The only pre-builts I buy are Systemax, FYI. They include disks to reinstall Windows. Few do anymore without paying extra. Also, NO BLOAT (unless you request it). I see Dell, Lenovo, HP, etc. computers out of the box and they are thilithy. I have to purge the drive just so I don't feel dirty using it. All Systemax computers I've seen from 2003-2008 were so clean, very little would be gained from erasing them--so I don't.
