New LCD Monitor

Hey guys, i finally got my Hanns.G 19" widescreen monitor today. overall its a beautiful looking screen, but i cant get use to the colors or something. Its like its not as crisp as my old 19" crt. i cant quite pinpoint it, but it just seems weird. Maybe LCDs are different, but im not sure. Im running it on a radeon x850 pro with DVI at 1440x900 res. am i doing something wrong, or what? it just doesnt seem as crisp as my CRT. is it something with the drivers?..

LCDs are different, to me in ways CRTs are better. Some things are clear on a LCD when others are better on a GOOD CRT.

cause i had an OLD (98, lol) CRT but it was pretty nice, and HUGE at the time. do you think there is an issue with my card, or is that just the way LCDs are. i also noticed its like the text isnt as sharp..

It depends on the Monitor I would think some are better than others. I am surprised that the words are blurry with a DV-I cable. The thing I don't like about the LCD are the movies, I think it looks digital compared to my Professional ViewSonic CRT. Maybe that's why I run a CRT and a LCD at the same time, both of best worlds.

would vga make a difference at all? i thought DVI was superior to vga, but not by much.

DVI is superior in sharpness. DV-I is digital and VGA is analog.

try changin the position of the lcd. It should seat in a 90 degrees angle.

If its running at its proper native Res it should look pretty crisp.If you lowered it below native Res then it would start too look fuzzy/unclear. Outside of that I would look thru the monitors own options to see if theres a sharpness, or alternatively test it with Clear Type on and off(I personally find Clear Type looks worse then Standard on LCD's but that may be a preference thing

Hanns G's are considered a cheaper brand for an LCD.
Their LCD panels are lower quality than known brands (like Dell, Viewsonic, Acer).

When shopping or looking for an LCD monitor, there are a few things to look for mainly.
1. Response Time (Very important for games and movies)
2. Contrast Ratio
3. Panel Type (Different Panels are better for different types of computers, currently TN panels are the best for gaming)
4. Display Colors

What I am guessing is the problem is that this panel is 6-bit, not 8-bit.
If that is not the case then the contrast ratio is not that good.

If either of these cases happen, the colors will not seem as sharp and a little washed out.
I am betting though that it is a 6 bit panel (which only offers 16.2 million colors opposed to an 8 bit panel which offers 16.7 million colors).

If you want any more info on LCD panels just let me know. I know quite a bit, but am not an expert yet. Also if you dont mind could you list the specs of that panel?

I read it is a TFT panel. 700:1 contrast ratio, 5ms response time. i just read it has 16.2 million colors, native res is 1440:900. here is the monitor.

The response time and contrast ratio are pretty good.
The problem you think you are seeing is bc of the 16.2 million colors.
This makes it not as sharp as a CRT (which is closer to the 16.7 million colors of 8 bit panels).
Newegg says all of their panels are TFT.
However, TN panels are the only panels currently that can have a very fast response time like the one you have.

Doesent the HannsG have pre-progammable modes for Brightness/contrast/gamma/colour correction etc it may be that you just need to tweak more with your settings which is a must for an Analogue as manual is the only option where DVi auto configures (normally).

Are you using the HannsG driver or the windows generic? whichever...try the other, if not, RMA the muvvaa and try a new one for size

Edit: Sorry are you running DVi? if so cancel the first part of this post but the 2nd part still applies (driver).

maybe i was sitting too close to my LCD. im used to my CRT being a foot away from me, maybe i need to move it back more...i played CS to see how games played and although it was different getting used to the widescreen, i was surprised how well the colors looked, the contrast between colors was very definite, so overall im pleased with the monitor, i just think it will take some getting used to.

Yes but to the Human eye there is no difference whatsoever, our sight is incapable of differentiating between 16.2 and 16.7million colours, in fact the human eye can only identify in an array (basically moving) 812 colours, no I am not a sad old git optician., my optician just told me when we were talking colour blindness a few weeks ago, has this screen gone Black and White??

I am not saying that you can see the exact colors.
What I am saying is that with 16.2 million colors (or a 6 bit panel), the colors does not look as sharp.
However, with 16.7 million colors (a 6 bit panel + dithering or a 8 bit panel), the colors look crisp and sharp like a CRTs.
I have tested this out by putting a 6 bit panel and 8 bit panel next to each other.
There is a noticable difference between them that can be distinguished.

you know, honestly, i wasnt even paying attention when i opened the box, i just wanted to see my beautiful screen but im pretty sure i remember seeing a disc in the packaging, maybe thats a driver for it?...

I got an Aoc 19in Widescreen monitor with 5ms response time and 1440x900 res and I could'nt be happier, be sure to play around with all of the settings.

thanks guys i appreciate all your input. i will mess around more with some settings and see what that disc was that came with it, hopefully its a Hanns.G driver or something.
