I want HL:3 and a new engine! The new engine will be epic! How much money have they made off of the old Source engine?

Would you really consider that surprising? I mean really profitibility kinda dictates that when there is time for it, STEAM will be ported, but currently the market isn't large enough for them to devote large resources to Linux, IMHO.

I think a Linux client is coming. I heard they have already hired a couple of Linux engineers.

EDIT: I know they have answered with a NO, but i would have done the same thing.

, but currently the market isn't large enough for them to devote large resources to Linux, IMHO.

which would be the perfect reason for them to do it no? The reason the market is so "small" is because no entity has made a push on Linux...and valve could take this lead :toast:

Steam OS. i.e like Asus Express Gate but for Steam games. An OS that only loads DirectX/OpenGL and related libraries (DirectInput, OpenAL...). Now that would rock and IMO it should have been done already, a long time ago. The number of games distributed by Steam is large enough* that it could be considered like a different platform, so why not effectively make it another platform.

Screw Linux, screw windows... Steam OS.

*Actually very few games don't release on Steam.

Not gonna work because 99% of the games require Windows anyway...

Linux doesn't require Windows.. :p

EDIT: All windows games CAN run using wine for linux. So Windows is require = NULL. But it does run better in Windows. I can't say anything about that.

I know I linked this before, when people were speculating on Portal 2.

http://www.facebook.com/pages/Joseph-Hill-Joss-Whedon/95553331655?v=wall&story_fbid=128556790489136

With Valve, it could be anything. I doubt it will have anything to do with Ep. 3 though, unfortunately.

I call shens on that one. If a movie will be made it will be Machinima(no different from say, Pixar movies), and done in-house.

I do have official word on the TF2 vids being practice for upcoming movie, but haven't heard anyone else about that...the Joss Whedon stuff makes me sick.

Not they don't. They use libraries that currently are only available to Windows, because they are developing for Windows OS, which is quite different. Valve has already demostrated that they are interested in developing outside of Windows, id and old friends (Raven, Gearbox, SplashDamage) would immediately join them probably (even Bethesda because they will probably use id tech) and have always developed for Mac anyway (and now consoles). OpenGL is just as capable as DirectX and can be used in every and all platforms and 99% of developers are interested in console, mobile, handheld (etc.) development at the moment, all of which are NOT Windows. Windows is in fact the only platform that is radically different from the rest. An imaginary Steam OS which used OpenGL would be very beneficial for Valve and many many other developers, especially those interested in multiplatform. The problem of migrating exist, that's undeniable, most current games would not work (unless they ported them), and Valve could enfuriate M$ with that move, but TBH if they could make said OS, they wouldn't have to care about M$ anymore.

Surprised?
Seriuosly, I thought I heard about a L4D film a while ago? Or am I tripping?
I like the idea of biometrics and watching opponents stress levels, etc.
Even if you don't like the idea of watching other people's, watching your own stress levels would be useful - a reminder to calm down and stop shaking.
Idea; if you're a sniper (in a game), watching your own biometrics would be MASSIVELY beneficial, teaching yourself when to breathe to get steadiest/calmest etc.

There are some other cool things that could be done with biometric readings. If you are plying against the games AI, the game's response to you could change depending upon your biometric readings. That would make things very immersive.

A L4D film? Hell no! Please... We don't need just another film with zombies. Also L4D has absolutely nothing to offer to the genre and would be just another generic zombie film, not to mention it would be just another film made for the only purpose to use a known game franchise to make gamers watch just another POS film.

Regarding biometrics... your last sentence would be cool if you were actually holding a sniper rifle, with a mouse what's the freaking point??

I think that's the idea.

I'm thinking about a game like Doom3, FEAR or Aliens vs Predator. In the first few levels, they were scary, very scary and you had no idea what could happen next, but they became repetitive after a while and you could almost start counting and know when they were coming out from the next corner etc. Now with biometrics, they could control when exactly an enemy would appear in front of you.
