I just bought a GTX465...

Thats right, at the weekend I ordered a POV GTX465 1GB for £164.99 (including Mafia II for free).

Madness I hear you cry? Not so.

Not bad eh? A fully functional GTX470 for £165 brand new from overclockers.

It turns out that (after doing alot of research) that the current batch of POV GTX465 cards have both the full compliment of 10 memory chips and the all important GF100-275-A3 GPU (GTX470).

I decided to take the risk and I am pretty pleased with the results. Obviously I can't guarantee that every POV GTX465 will unlock or for that matter how long stocks will last.

I have just run a couple of preminary benchmarks (Mafia II and Just Cause 2) and I am currently seeing roughly 20-25% performance increase over the pre flashed GTX465 and 15-20% increase over a stock clocked GTX460.

Anyway enough of my rambling, here are few images:

Of course you can disable parts of your GTX 470 via a BIOS flash - only makes sense (both companies do it all the time with seconds).

I got a bit of a heart in the mouth moment when I erased the bios from the GTX465. At that precise moment I paniced thinking I didn't transfer the required GTX470.rom bios file onto my stick pen.



All worked out in the end though.

I also tested the GTX460 on my wife's machine. The E2160 is holding it back but in L4D (1&2) - which is all she plays at the moment - it is fine. She can max out everything (only plays at 1440x900) and run stupid levels of AA.

I will be replacing her cpu eventually with a decent (but cheap) quad core but I want to see how far this little E2160 clocks first.

Quick word of warning to anyone else thinking about flashing your GTX465, only do so if it's one of the following models:

PNY GTX465 with black PCB (Blue PCB model does not have the required 10 memory chips)
Point of View GTX465 - all current models appear to unlock (how long this will be the case is unknown)
MSI GTX465 Twin Frozr GE - Possible the best one to unlock due to the aftermarket cooler, I couldn't find this in the UK though.

If your card is not one of the above it (or is a non reference design) it is very unlikely that it will unlock. You could possibly use the Asus unlock tool to get the full shader count but it seems to be very hit and miss.

AthlonX2 - It looks like it has been 'unlocked' using the Asus unlocker. Some cards are capable of being 'unlocked' to the full GTX470 shader count as they are locked at the bios level (although some cores could be defective). Some however are hard locked at the hardware level.
