I am trying to get my operating system/programs able to run from a USB flash drive/hard drive. I don't know if this makes sense, but basically I have been told there are programs that allow you to install applications on your thumb drive and bring it to any computer and use them (from what I can tell, these programs use a Windows overlay, similar to VMware).

There are several things I am looking for in such a program:

1: Must be able to easily install complex applications (such as large games and other DVD-installed programs; meaning the install package is not a single executable)
2: Must be able to run on multiple machines *without* installing any software on the guest computer
3: Would like it to be as fast as possible, although speed isn't my main concern

There are others that I am forgetting right now, but that should help for now. Does anyone know of what I am talking about, and where I can look?

*EDIT*
I have tried something called "MojoPac", but haven't had a whole lot of success so far (very hard to install, and after successful install it won't run on another computer). I have also tried "VMware ACE", which would have been perfect but as far as I can tell it requires that you install "VMware Player" on the guest machine, which won't work in my case.

This is not very easy to do, but you can try this: http://www.ceedo.com/

Also you can try Portable Apps.

I will look into Ceedo, thanks. I was somewhat hoping that there was a VMware feature that would let me do this (since I already have VMware Workstation), but I haven't found it yet. I did read that you can make a bootable VMware ACE Portable using VMware Workstation, but haven't found a good guide so far. Thanks for the input. Any more ideas?

Ceedo allowed the program to install, but gave like 20 errors when I tried running it :(

You got 17 hours to get this for free:Giveaway of the Day - Prayaya V3

Prayaya V3 - Portable Virtual Operating System

What is Prayaya V3?

It runs 32 bit, but it does not support 64 bit, but heck... I figure free; you could try it, if you want.

Yeah I will try it for sure. Just a quick question about the "Giveaway" thing.. Does this mean it is free to use for the next 17 hours, or if I download it now I can keep it for free? Like I get a free license or something? Thanks for your help.

"Unzip the package you've downloaded, and carefully read the instructions which you can find in the readme.txt file. This readme.txt file is included with all our downloads. Follow the instructions carefully to install and activate the software."

Usually, the stuff I get from there is a full license to use that version of the software forever; however, it usually does not carry over to upgraded version, unless you pay.

EDIT:
Also, quote from the giveaway site:

"Terms and conditions"

"Please note that the software you download and install during the Giveaway period comes with the following important limitations: 1) No free technical support; 2) No free upgrades to future versions; 3) Strictly personal usage"

Prayaya does not appear to support a 64 bit OS.

Yeah that is what I read, but didn't understand completely if that meant it would expire or not. Now I think they mean as long as I register today, I can use this one (registered) copy indefinitely, but don't get upgrades or tech support. Sounds good to me :)

Thanks for the heads up.

*EDIT*
I am working on a x86 O/S for now anyway, so x64 compatibility isn't an issue.

Another one I've used before that looks very similar to Prayaya is http://www.mojopac.com/download.html It has the same no 64bit OS limitation. This one is free (not for just today like Prayaya)

While there is a free version, to access all of the features (at least from what I saw when I tested it) you must pay $40-50 for the Deluxe or Professional version. I originally tried MojoPac (free version), but it wouldn't run my programs without giving tons of errors (like Ceedo). Thanks for the idea though.

Portableapps was a pita imho. Why call the apps portable when you have to install them ??? And some of the apps like Opera are such a pita to operate , it`s kinda pointless to change them !
