Case Bitfenix Merc Alpha

My 7650GS is too slow for MOH so I'm looking for an upgrade.
Requirements:
-can be passively cooled
-small enough to fit in an Lian Li PC-Q08 (mini itx case)
-doesn't need pci-6 pin power
-fast enough for MOH @ 1680x1050/1920x1080 medium quality

Candidates:

-GT 240 GDDR5 version + Zalman VNF100
-Sapphire Ultimate HD5670 1GB GDDR5
-Sapphire Ultimate HD 4670 512MB GDDR3

Personally I like the nvidia drivers better so I want to get the GT 240 GDDR5 version and install the Zalman cooler on it, the problem is that I don't know if the Zalman is going to fit on the GT 240.

The Sapphire cards are already installed with an passive cooler so I wouldn't need to worry about those cards.

GT 240 + Zaman VNF100 cost about 100 euro's, so does the Sapphire HD 5670.
The 4670 is much cheaper only 65 euro's.

Which one should I choose and why?

From what I understand, the 5670 is better than a GT 240, what with DX11 and all. 4670 I'm not sure of, prolly around the same level. I'd suggest the 5670, as I don't think a 240 could handle it.

Apparently the Zalman VNF100 fits on the GT 240. I think I'm going for that combination, unless someone could convince me not to..,

I would normally agree with you on that (nVidia ftw, lol), but from what I underdstand the 240 is a hit-and-miss card. Sometimes it's better than an 8800GS, sometimes it's not. Sometimes it's as good as an 8800GT, sometimes it's as bad as an 8600GT. You get the idea. :p

Hmm the 5670 is about 10-15% faster than the GT (G)DDR3 version, but I haven't seen a comparison with the GT 240 GDDR5 version yet. I bet they'd be very close. The 5670 does have DX11 where the GT 240 does not (Am I going to miss the DX11 feature?)...but again I like nvidia drivers better...

Well, you might not. Then again, when next year rolls around and they phase out DX9 support it's going to be all DX10.1/11. DX10 was mainly a exercise from what I hear, barely any developers have bothered with it, so 8-300 series owners are going to have a hard time. If the 5670 costs the same, performs on a par or better and has DX11 support, I'd go with that.

Why not a "green" 9800GT? If you got an SPDIF header for audio that will take care of hdmi audio. If not then opt for the 5670.

9800GT, too big, too expensive and outdated.

:banghead:
the bold is one of the stupidest reasons i have heard of not to buy a card that performs the same and even sometimes better as the cards that you are considering. It has all of the "features" of the other cards(other then onboard audio). But the other reason are valid. Keep in mind this post is just my opinion and isn't intended to piss anyone off.

Now to answer the original question i would go with the 5670. I myself hate ATI drivers but Nvidia doesn't have anything that can stack up to ATI in this level.

just keep in mind no matter what you pick it will be a big upgrade from the card you are using in it now.

This is very true.

I'd probably go for a 9800GT EE, it's a perfectly powerful card, even if it's a bit old.

It's over his budget.

@OP you said the 9800GT EE is too big.. IIRC they are smaller then the normal 9800gt
just a thought.

1.) what is your mainboard config?

2.) what is chipset?

3.) what does it support? pcie? pci? agp?

4.) what power supply do you have?

5.) what is you system setup? (like wiring/hard drive&optical drive placing)

6.) what is your budget? (some pci/agp card are really expansive and rare to find if you don't have pcie slot)

>>>since you have a gt240 in service that means you have pcie slot so we'd just skip no.3

Damn, your card is even worse than mine :p
Anyway, GT240 (you can replace it later as a physx card!)
Or 5670 512 (the 1GB is ONLY waste of money)
4670 or GT430 NO WAY!!!
if you want to go for them than you better get 8400GS

If it will fit, a 9800GT would be an excellent choice. Just a little slower than a GTS 250 (which is basically a 9800GTX+). However, the it is still only DX10 vs the 5670's DX11.

There were "green" models of the HD5770 and HD5750 without any extra PCIe power connectors. All the power was delivered from the PCIe slot. Not sure how big they were, but they'd be an excellent choice if you can fit them inside. They should cost around 100-120 EUR.

I would say get either a 5750 or 5770*single slot version* or a GTX460.

Am I going to miss the DX11 feature?

Simply put; NO.

The HD 5670 is not powerful enough to utialize any of the DX11 features in any noticeable way with playable framerates.
