Yummy...
But 460 got cut to $200, and 6870 is $240.
6870 has 20% beter than 460.
So isnt it just the same ?

Im just hoping 6870 has the same price as 460...

hey guys,

What's the current speculation about when the 6970 may be released in the uk? I was planning on having next friday off work to build a new system and was planning on getting a 5870 but i'm tempted to wait now for the 6970 to come out to push the price 5870 down in price. Is this a good idea or will this be a while yet?

Someone please talk me out of buying a 6870, after spending so many hours reading the reviews this morning i want to buy one... or two of them and a couple more monitors... that's not good as i want to wait for the 6970

if you want to do eyefinity youy should considering HD 6970 with 2 GB card because it would really help with that ridiculous resolution

If you want a 5870 you need to be quick. They will disappear very soon and i dont think they will get much cheaper than the current very cheap price.

thanks man, are you from indonesia too?

and btw i hope AMD enable the sideport i'm really want to see it perform vs conventional PLX chip

EDIT : btw GTX 580 will be late again, because no where nvdia can build that monster chip on 40nm, they even can't make fully working GTX480

IMO dont ever play the "future proof" game with a video card. Why? Because in 6 months time there will be a faster, cheaper, lower power consumption card, that will blow away your "future proof investment".

However, if your 4770 isnt quite cutting the mustard, then a 5850 or GTX460 would fix your issues.

Well you can never future proof for ever that is for sure. But you can definitely future proof for awhile depending on what you are doing with your equipment.

SidePort is memory-memory link. If implemented properly it might work really well, but htere are many caveats to getting that performance that prevented it from being relevant previously.

What I can tell you to do is the same thing I am planning. Buy two if these annd either sell them in a month or shortly after the reviews come out on the 6970 or Buy two of these and just buy two 6970's when they release.

What ever you decision is .... I would just suggest buying some of these now :) !

So to someone who isn't replacing an existing card, what do you guys recommend for a new build with regards to decent graphics? I'm looking at roughly getting core i7 950, 6gb 1600Mhz ram, 1tb 7200 hdd, possibly a ssd for the OS, silverstone raven rv02 (if they actually appear in stock again for less than £140) motherboard to be decided but i'm not sure what graphics to go for. I have a small 19" monitor which wouldn't use anything like the power of the 5870 or the others for that matter but i also have a 32" full hd tv that i am thinking about hooking up to which would. Not sure which to go for, i can afford the 5870 just about keeping the build under £1100 but the newer series would clearly be more affordable.

Ordered a Sapphire 6850 from newegg. The Gigabyte 6850, PowerColor 6850 and Asus 6870 are already out of stock so if you want one better get it fast before they are all out.

Was just thinking that last card I owned that didn't have issues of some kind was an ATI built X800XL...hopefully this bucks the trend.

I really think i'm going to end up giving in, i can go with eyefinity with buying 2 more of my current monitor for only £220 and with the 6970 i intended to go with some 26" monitors but they cost £750 so with the 6970 i would geuss definatly over £1000 and i would not be supprised if it was £1250 to £1350 including an active display port adaptor and i don't have quite that much spare and don't think i will by next month or even for sure by the end of the year.

I geuss all i'm going to get is encouragement so I geuss it's time to see how far i can push my budget :D *goes over to scan.co.uk to see what he can get*

I advise you not to upgrade yet. Personally, I'll upgrade when 78xx/79xx comes along and only providing game requirements move beyond the limitations imposed by the Xbox and Play 3. My card is the last and fastest ATI-branded single card release and I'm staying with the band and playing on for a while.

At the very least I'd wait until 6970 comes along in a month as you may regret a hasty decision. Moreover, I always advocate a single card rather than a Crossfire or SLI setup. That said, if you decided to Crossfire 2 6870's, I couldn't honestly say that you had made a bad decision.

Here you go if you hurry they are in stock... I hear one or two of these calling your name....

http://www.scan.co.uk/products/1gb-sapphire-hd-6870-4200mhz-gddr5-gpu-900mhz-1120-stream-processors-dl-dvi-i-dvi-d-hdmi-mdp

Then you could grab this or something like it from the same place :)
http://www.scan.co.uk/products/dell-bizlink-active-displayport-to-dvi-(dual-link)-adapter-1080p-ready

If it makes you feel any better you are making me feel the need to grab a couple more 24inch monitors at my local store for eyefinity as well. I would also have to find and active display port.

I advise you not to upgrade yet. Personally, I'll upgrade when 78xx/79xx comes along and only providing game requirements move beyond the limitations imposed by the Xbox and Play 3. My card is the last and fastest ATI-branded single card and I'm staying with the band and playing on for a while.

But what you also talk about with xbox and PS3 is exactly that. That is why it is a good time now. Really waiting for a card that costs $200 to $250 more if not even higher to gain FPS that don't matter anyway would be ridiculous. Especially since a 6870 could handle anything anyway.

Why not upgrade then fro power improvement/better tessellation/better AA performance/exc..... my point is while in terms of speed it is a side grade sure. But in terms of everything else it is a huge whopping up grade.
Also if you wait to get the 6970/6950 while they will be awesome cards..... you will be not needing all that extra power for quite awhile. So all you would be gaining is bragging rights. (Not that isn't cool we all have done it :) ) But still I like the improved features of these cards (6870/6850) I would definitely consider them an upgrade.

Yeah I was hohoho.
Im in study creating a blog, like on my signature...

I think just like 480, it would be a 6 month late, or a year. For a product that 6 month late than it competitor, it got hot temperature. Well just hoping a 580 has a beast inside....

bear jesus is using a 4870, so an upgrade to even a single 6870 is probably a very wise move, then again, if he plans to Crossfire in the future, I would advise against that and urge him to buy a 6970. I was just trying to explain the way I thought and your post is as convincing as mine, so what the hell, go buy a 6870 now bear, that's the advice ;)

Edit: if the 6970 is the dual card solution (too lazy to look at the minute), I am referring to it by mistake, I'm advocating the fastest single card release rather than Crossfire or a single-slot dual card.

Scan is tempting me to spend more money  i'm going to use the buy now pay 9 months later deal so i can get a couple more monitors, 4tb more storage, a 6870 and an active display port adaptor.... then when the 6970 comes out i will have the cash to buy one :D

Although now i'm trying to work out if i should get 2 6870's as i'm not sure it will be worth it if i'm just going to sell them within a couple months.... decisions decisions  Any oppinions on weather i should get one or two 6870's?

*edit*
i already have a 22" acer v223w and they are only £110 each so i'm goign to hold off on the bigger monitors for a while and just go for 5040x1050 :D

II'll upgrade when 78xx/79xx comes along

No man I totally get were your coming from. It just sounds like he is leaning that way anyway. So I am just giving him a little extra push.

No argument meant from my part just giving My opinion bud. :toast:

See for me that would depend on whether you are selling them in a month or so. Although don't listen to me on that.... I got two and I might still sell them in a month or two :)

Really i was interested in upgrading when i knew the 5xxx and 4xx cards were coming so i have been delaying so long i almost don't care what i get i just want new toys

I geuss it depends how well they do at 5040x1050, if 2 run well enough i could just get them and hold on for the 6970 to drop in price or if the performance is not that much more than 6870 crossfire try and wait it out untill the 7xxx series, hmmmm.....

If you feel that way, go buy the 6870 now, seriously, it's 95% of a 5870 most of the time, better at a lot of things and will only improve as drivers mature.

I wouldn't "upgrade" to a 68xx series if I was on anything between a 460 and a 480, but it is a very impressive, well priced card for nearly everybody else.
