Cant format external drive

I bought a My passport essential SE 1TB ------ and when I plug it in, it asks to format the drive first. But when I go ahead and format it, it says "windows was unable to complete the format". please help :)

edit 1: and when i try to go to the drive it says "the request could not be performed because of an i/o device error"

edit 2 : i also found out that the drive is in RAW format not NTFS. i read up from various sites one reason windows doesnt recognise the
drive is because "it's too big of a partition" or sth like that
edit 3 : when i try to change sharing setting to full control (from read only) i get this error

I read that some people found that disabling the 1394 (FireWire) connection under networks fixed this issue.

The size of the drive is not the problem. Windows should have no problem with a 1TB drive.

quick question: if the drive is borked, would it still show up as RAW in disk management?

Things to try from easiest to hardest:
1) Try plugging it into another USB port.
2) Try plugging it into a different computer.
3) Try opening it up and plugging it in SATA style
4) Try removing your hair with your fists.

quick question: if the drive is borked, would it still show up as RAW in disk management?
Plausible.

The io errors can be caused by a lot of stuff such as the powersupply being faulty, the drive itself going bad or the controller board in the external enclosure.
I would remove the drive from the enclosure, hook the drive up directly to ur pc and test it to quickly find if the problem is the drive itself or something else.

That would probably void the warranty. Sinse in sounds like he just bought the drive, I'd just return it.

Since this is one of those drives powered entirely from the USB port, it could also just be that the USB port isn't providing enough power. I've seen that before as well.
