I have problem getting update for windows. So decided to do a system restore. After doing a system restore i am able to update my windows but notice the free hard disk space had reduce.
Before doing the system restore my free space in my C drive is about 33.6GB ( if i am not mistaken, quite sure anyway ) but after the system restore is 26.6GB. Despite having less program installed.
Any idea where to those free space in my C drive went? And any idea what went wrong?

Do you have a defragger(s) like Raxco PerfectDisk &/or Executive Software's Diskeeper?

If so, run a defrag that has "Aggressive Free Space Consolidation" abilities present (they have diff. kinds of defrags & diff. optimizations in them & why I mention them)...

* They MAY help!

Good Luck!

APK

P.S.=> Just mentioning them, because it's possible that just pulling the system restore has robbed you of SOME 'contiguous diskspace'... doesn't makes sense you have less space, but possibly some form of logging has eaten up space here... I can see a HUGE tracking log forming possibly after a restore, eating up space to a good extent, but not sure admittedly... perhaps this MAY help you though... apk

Could be that your PC is full of "temp" junk. Go www.ccleaner.com and grab a copy. Report back how many MB is cleaned

Already have Ccleaner in my pc. But did nothing of the kind. Have Diskeeper too will try it out later. Any idea what can cause this?

Where can i find defrag that has "Aggressive Free Space Consolidation" ?

I mention a couple possibles above:

Raxco PerfectDisk is one, for certain, that I know has this option...

Executive Software's Diskeeper & possibly O&O Defrag also may have such options...

I have not used these latter 2 in awhile, & am a BIT hazy on their options' details...

Simply because I went w/ Raxco's PerfectDisk recently over Diskeeper (which I have used since version 1.1 in the NT 3.5x days, & was featured as a testimonial user on their website back in 1996 for "Enterprise Class Users", & they even sent me a Diskeeper pen (my fav one no less, lol))...

PerfectDisk does do a better job in 1 pass, than Diskeeper does, & I hated to admit it... GHayes, one of Raxco's support techs, & I "had it out" @ NTCompatible.com one time, & he swore to me that Raxco would surpass ExecSoft in this capacity, & it appears they have, from version 7 onwards.

I couldn't deny evidences from tests I saw, recent ones from Raxco & possibly 3rd parties tests, & even those evidences put up in a thread here....

A lot of testing work was done in that area, & ExecSoft hasn't replied in kind, anywhere I could find @ least.

Diskeeper's moving to more of the "uptime is most important" line of thinking & continues to do so... by emphasizing online defrag smoothness as one of their strong points. It seems Raxco has gone the OTHER way, making single pass forefront MANUAL defragging more important & thorough, vs. background online defrag passes.

Depends on how you look @ it. For networked defrags & server defrags? I could see ExecSoft's approach as being better potentially... but, for a home users?? I have to go w/ Raxco's approach in more thorough SINGLE PASS defrag runs.

(Try those!)

:)

* Good Luck!

Free up the space that is used for system restore. If you didn't do that in a while it could win you a couple of gig's back. You can do it here:
Go to advanst in the window.

Well, assuming you didn't reformat & use a diff. cluster/sector size (& lost space due to "cluster slack" etc.)?

I would say I may have "hit on it" earlier, in logging... odds are, it may have generated 7mb difference worth of data restoring EACH FILE it restored!

(& depending on where it sent that data to (a good bet is the EVENT LOGS, System, Application, or other sections in EventViewer), I can see 7mb of entries being possibly created, depending on how much you have on your disks).

Simple test?

Empty your EventVwr.msc eventlogs... see if the space comes back.

If your system is running ok now, you could disable system restore then re enable it, thus removing all previous restore points and freeing up that lost space!

Get back to us on this one please, MacBeth... I am curious if this is the case, & the system is logging files somehow, somewhere.

I would guess it would hit the eventlogs, but do they even EXIST during SYSTEM RESTORE Processes?

Not sure, admittedly, one I can gain by here...

I clear the log from EventVwr.msc but it did not recover much hard drive space. So i try clearing the retore point. Now my free hard drive space is about 34.4GB as compared to 26.6GB after my system restore.
Anyway before i did a system restore. I did create a system restore point manually from system restore. Will the system restore point account for the lost free hard drive space?

I clear the log from EventVwr.msc but it did not recover much hard drive space. So i try clearing the retore point.

It wasnt there, didn't figure it would be... next thing I was going to tell you was use an app like TreeSize, which can report largest folders, & possibly iirc, files as well once in a directory/subdirectory/folder/subfolder...

Look for a file around 7mb in size & then judge by filename & date created.

Now my free hard drive space is about 34.4GB as compared to 26.6GB after my system restore.

If an old one/set, that's not needed anymore? THEN, good, you got rid of dead weight...

However, if it's the newest one & current/needed? Well, you tell me?? It's your machine.

Anyway before i did a system restore. I did create a system restore point manually from system restore. Will the system restore point account for the lost free hard drive space?

Depends on the above I last wrote I would think...
