Looks like the 6 series from AMD and the mythical 5 series from Nvidia are just going to be transition parts anyways. Cards released for competition's sake. I'm going to be pursuing my other hobbies and not be wasting my money on computer parts for a while. Once 28nm hits, I may become more interested again. Then again, it all depends on what Cayman actually is...

No erocker - you dont understand. You're on a tech forum. You have no other hobbies. Tech is your life, your wife and your financial strife. You cannot escape it. You cannot ever become untechnified. Though you may try and play squash or basketball, build model ships or play instruments in a local rock band, tech is your life. It is everything....

And then there will be Cayman and you will not be able to resist. The Borg said it first and it wasn't about assimilation - it was about Cayman - Resistance is Futile! Your wallet shall be lighter next month.

Can we please have a Jean Luc Picard emoticon so we can say "Make it so!" with a smiley?

I have had more then enough of reading 5770-6870 debates people if in doubt theres 58 pages here that if you bothered reading would surely straghten it out for you regarding the rebranding, and fundamentally it had to be done to make room for the upcomeing APU(cpu) launch which will include an integrated 400 shader 5xxx series gpu in silicon with its Bulldozer/ontario/lano processors wotever im not 100% on which but the point is room was needed at the bottom end of there scale plus there still neeeded to be some point upgradeing so midrange and bottom range needed speccing so as to still be attractive to us the customers. seems fair enough to me now bout them 6990 Watagawannin they gota be doing somat better then 23000ish in vantage dual 6870s might beat them, then again that would force the price to be 300 ish not bad

You'll also have people like me posting pictures and screenshots tonight to further mock you muahahaha.

But I had to pay $275 for the card because of my shitty tax, so you can mock me for that.

I love all the Nvidiots in this thread who have nothing better to do than troll with their Nvidia cards, while the people who actually bought ATI are playing games with the money they saved. The wife and I played Dirt2 yesterday for awhile on the big screen, all settings maxxed.

AMD Radeon HD 6970 Results surface

Interesting, some leaked AMD Radeon 6970 (Cayman))results have surfaced,The Radeon HD 6970 (as it stands now in early days yet, without proper drivers and a proper release) looks like it will be at least 10% faster than the NVIDIA GeForce GTX480 (reference).

The card is scoring X12000 in 3D Mark Vantage, with a P score of P24499. Unigine Heaven results (1920 x 1200, 4xAA, 16xAF) giving a result of 36.6 fps.
a HD5870 scores P19337 in 3D Mark Vantage, and 17.3 fps in Heaven
a GTX480 scores P21106 in 3D Mark Vantage, and 29.5 fps in Heaven

Core speeds seem to be at around 800 - 900MHz, 6 + 8pin power requirements and an estimated TDP of 255W or more [via TweakTown via Zol.com.cn]

See the above.

I love all the Nvidiots in this thread who have nothing better to do than troll with their Nvidia cards, while the people who actually bought ATI are playing games with the money they saved. The wife and I played Dirt2 yesterday for awhile on the big screen, all settings maxxed.

Unfortuantely, attitudes like this don't help. I agree with your sentiment, but at the same time, I've been playing Dirt2 on high/Ultra 4xAA for over a year now. That's the problem...these cards offer nothing new..not even performance-wise.

OK, OK, we got MLAA..but uh...that's so last year too...Batman AA, anyone?

This launch is a major letdown for those who know what's up. We got "official" word this launch would be top-to-bottom...we were told to expect a major change...that the launch may leave us surprised...

I guess we got that major change...huge price drops, here, and that's good, but...the surprise wasn't positive.

I had the cash to buy a card...I bought an Intel cpu and board, instead. :twitch:

a HD5870 scores P19337 in 3D Mark Vantage, and 17.3 fps in Heaven

Oh yeah? Those numbers are fake, as both are possible, on that card, yes, but the system that got the first score DIDN'T get the second, for sure. I spent some time duplicating those numebrs this weekend, to see what's up...it left me unexcited.

I was hoping for more like 15% to 20% faster for the TDP, assuming this is right i would hope with some overclocking it could reach 15-20% faster than the 480 with less power usage but i assume the TDP would be close if overvolting is used.

If the TDP is true this basicly rules out 6970 crossfire for me although i kind of expected that.

Not a let down to me :p but then again i have a single 512mb 4870 and personal/psu limits for my max power usage and heat output so it was not that hard to impress me

But umm what change or supprise? i never noticed one

High Ultra 8XAA?

My beef is that Nvidiots are thread crapping here, discouraging people from buying a card that is frankly, awesome for the price. If they are confused about the price/name/performance they need to learn to read.

Nvidiots also have been the victim of a threepeat, yes, one card with three names. This is a new card, a whole new GPU for all intents and purposes, maybe not a revolution as much as a evolution, but still alot better than just slapping a new decal on a card and charging away like Nvidia does.

According to the slides Juniper is not being rebranded but continued. If more 5700 series are made available after the 6000 series launch they were not rebranded.

so they're going to keep the name at 5770 and not rebrand to 6770 as we thought?

Yeah...remember that these new cards are slower than the previous gen. And 5870 has been out for a year now, and I ran tw ocards until recently. The performance compare may change with driver optimizations, but because the shaders haven't changed, I do not think that the boost will be that signifigant...because any optimizations would work on 5-series too.

Sure, they may have intentionally nerfed the 68-series driver on release to clear out 5850/5870 stock...

If the 68xx series was to be the replacement of the 58xx series I would be worried. They are day and night more powerful then the 57xx series which they are meant to replace. Why are you holding them up to the 58xx?

I still think people should be compairing the 6870/50 to the old mid range that is the 5770/50, as then how could anyone then say they are slower than the previous gen.

*edit* beat me to it

If the 68xx series was to be the replacement of the 58xx series I would be worried. They are day and night more powerful then the 57xx series which they are meant to replace. Why are you holding them up to the 58xx?

I agree.

Cad they have new shaders surely? 960 shader 6850 performs just behind 5850 (beats it if overclocked) 800 shaders 5770 is quite some way behind.

true but the 16 rop's 40 tmu's and 128-bit memory are also factors in that.

they improved performance per shader but not by that much. lol

I forgot about the other changes

Ignore my last post.

I don't know if shaders are changed or not then.

I think one thing to remember about the 68XX cards is that these cards have the biggest redesign since the HD2900XT, ATI's first unified card, every card since then has basically had the same exact shaders rehashed and updated until AMD fixed them in the 4XXX series.

What I'm trying to say is that before everyone sits back and says these cards suck and they're not that fast enough, give them time for the drivers to mature.

Because the real 5950 and 5970 failed, due to thier size, as did Fermi. AMD simply started development earlier than nV on the process. People complaining about the renaming, IMHO, have it backwards...The 5-series naming was screwed, not the 6-series.

The shaders are not changed. The dispatch processor that feeds the shaders has changed as well as cache organization, etc.

Keep Moore's law in mind, guys. It's only been a year since the 5-series launch, so of course, this 6-series is a refresh. The 6870 is to the 5870 as the 9800XT to the 9800PRO, the X850 to the X800, The X1900 to the X1800, the 3870 to the 2900, the 4890 to the 4870...

We got a big boost in performance with 5-series, due to many factors, including DX11, Win7, and even nVidia.

Cayman might offer that boost that so many want, but based on the past, figuring in TSMC problems, large die size, etc...I think it's also going to disappoint many.

This is NOT ATi's first "unified" card, unfortunately. Cayman approaches that, but Barts definately does not. It is also not a major re-design..it's a minor tweak, only. Cayman is the major tweak, and based on the fact it's not out yet, it's gonna have issues.
