I'm going to see what I can get this chip to do. Someone recommended a CoGage True Spirit cpu cooler... Anybody have any input or feedback? I haven't done this so I'm just wanting to make sure I won't have any fitment/compatability issues.:banghead:

Thanks.

Benchmark Scores I dont have time for that.
negative. It wont work. you need a 1156 CPU cooler. Their is apparently a adapter plate you can get but its hard to find and gets in the way of some 1156 mobo power circuitry.

i found this which is close to the price range of the one you listed. its 120mm and should do the job.

Seems that that is a solely 1366 cooler, and an adapter can be had for 775. I would avoid. Solaris is correct.

Thanks sent.

I don't really have a budget on this... are there any other coolers you might recommend?

I say look at Thermalright coolers if you like the CoGage styling. There are tons of good coolers out there, its more a choice of style, as a bunch are going to perform really close to each other in temperatures.

personally im a fan of tuniqs

noctuas

and xigmateks

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835233040

though thermalright and prolimateks catch my eye from time to time. those are just coolers that I know to be good. but you cant go wrong with any of the coolers from those companys imo. just look at the compatability.

Yeah water can be a pain but Ill never go back either. Besides I like tinkering with my PC though in all honesty sometimes I just want to freakin' play a game and not top off my loop.

Water cooling eh?... This seems like a bit of a leap for me at this point. I'm NEW to this! :)

I think I'm going to start off with an air cooler (it's going to cost around 40 bucks) and see how well that works. When I start getting into water, I'll probably upgrade to a newer CPU anyways and I can do it all at once.

Using an aircooler will affect clocks in summer, for sure(our 30c summers don't agree with overclocking very much).

You'd almost be better off with $80 or $100 for either of the Corsair H50/H70 coolers. They are easy to install, self-contained, and relatively maintenance-free.

At $40...you aren't going to get a very good cooler, period. And when you get into the costs of a good aircooler, water becomes a more appealing value for your money.

I'm running the same basic rig as you now, but i5 760 and H55. It took water to get 4ghz stable at decent temps, but once on water, it wasn't hard at all. And I'm using an H50..not exactly the best watercooling out there, but it works.

Heh. Yeah, not something i can control, though.

:twitch:

In all seriousness though, it really depends on what your goals in performance are.

3.5-3.6ghz would be perfectly fine on air, maybe even on the stock cooler, with reasonable temperatures. Those speeds are perfectly fine for gaming. I've been running that speed basically since i built the rig, running a 5870 as you are.

Yesterday and today I've been playing with 4.0ghz, and while I can notice a difference in daily tasks, it's not jaw-dropping. And the heat is kinda holding me back from leaving it there.

So, if you want to try for 4ghz, air isn't an option, in my opinion. If you are happy with a modest overclock, then sure, air is fine.

If you want to go full water, but are a bit leary about installing it, I can give you a hand with that, but really, it's not that difficult. Gotta "get your feet wet" somehow...

I've got serveral "high-end" air coolers...I'm not too happy with them, to be honest. Each and every one does a good job, but doing so requires a noisy fan.

So even if you are not trying for high clocks, but want to quieten down the system, water is the best option, hence me jumping right into it.
