Hy guys.
I am thinking about getting a new card, and i can get a 5850 and a 6870 for about the same money. Which one would your recommend and why? Thanks.

I forgot to mention i am planing to go cross-fire later on.

I'd go with the 6870 because:
-It appears to be marginally better than the 5850 in most games
-Somewhat better tesselation performance
-Support for 3D and HDMI 1.4a

There are some negatives though:
-Higher power consumption (in most tests)
-Higher temperature (in most tests)
-Lack of FP64 (which doesn't matter to most people)

That's honestly all I can think of. Pretty damned similar cards. If you plan to overclock then the HD5850 may be a better choice because I recall several people saying that the HD5850 (when OCed) could trounce the HD6870 (when OCed). I dunno though...

It's a lot more than half actually. :D

I'd recommend you spent 5 minutes reading the 6870 review posted HERE instead of making a thread that will surely keep popping up over and over again in the next month. :shadedshu

Aside from that, obviously the 6870.

Edit: Yes, I'm harsh.....but people just cant use their own minds these days or take 5 minutes to read something for themselves.

I guess that's called laziness and also the reason half the world is fucked lol

Not like you aren't lazy most of the time

I have read the reviews, probably more than you. I just wanted to hear some other thoughts. Is that a crime? I mean wtf.

If you had read the review you'd see what card is the better of the two and wouldn't need to ask.

But, for the sake of making you feel good, if you provide more info (resolution you game at, prefered IQ, etc.) I'm sure someone will help you further. :)

That's like asking for other peoples thoughts on a choice like " I can be given a free £50 or a free £40, what should I do?"

It's always gona be the 50 assuming theirs no catch right?

We're all gona say 6870 tbh lol

Crossfire scaling anyone?

70.8685 average including the games/benchmarks that had shit scaling like CAJ2 supcom 2 and the 2 3dmarks ( also wow and ut3)

Thanks guys, the reason i asked was becouse i wanted to hear if people have some experiences about overclocking these cards. I think i read somwhere that a 5850 can overclock higher(and perform) than a 6870. But i think i will be getting the 6870 after all. And later on add a second.

A 5870 with a good over-clock beats the 6870, but the 5850 doesn't : ]

So 6870 is best choice for sure, especially as you said you'd like crossfire.

Are you sure Panther?

5870 baseline pefrormance is better than 6870.
5850 can OC near 5870 level, so yeah, 5850 OCed can beat 6870 (but it will consume more power).

In 5850 vs 6870 - 6870 wins though.

That relative performance graph is the most useless one in the entire review.

You should be making your decision based on each individual result. ( note, internet makes this sound like I'm being sharp, trust me I'm trying to be friendly :p)

Hell even with that graph my statement is still correct lol.

5870 will net you better than performance that a 6870 both at stock, and both over-clocked.

So which graph do You suggest? In every resolution 5870 is better. 6870 wins only in heavy tesselation applications (like Heaven). In games included in TPU review 6870 loses.

All I'm saying is - 5870 dont need to be OCed to win with 6870. And OCed 5850 can also beat 6870.

PS. I know You are friendly  :D

It's >$100 cheaper. The performance gap between HD5870 and HD6870 isn't worth $100.

85% of the performance on average, for 64% of the price. (

That's why 6870 wins XD

Right now 6870 is much better choice than 5870/5850, I know.
I was just talking about raw performance. :)

raw performance after OCs, the 5850 is probably on par with the 6870....

The 6870's 85+% scaling in games (except couple shitty games), and all the features the 6870 packs = OBVIOUS choice, even compared to 175$ for a used 5850 vs 240$ for a new 6870 for me

The only sensible buy for a 5850 now is if you get a really good deal on a used or open box one. The retail price for new 5850's hasn't dropped nearly enough yet to make it a decent option. The price after rebate promos is getting close, but who wants to mess around with that when you can get something faster with more features and less power consumption for about the same price (before rebates)?
