Hmm, GTX580 on the way, AMD are nowhere to be seen with concrete specs or any performance figures to spoil the 580 launch, I'm better the 6970 is not much better than a 480, 5-20% game depending.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: It is unrealistic to expect the impossible from AMD. AMD(and Nvidia too come to think of it) have yet to have a new gen GPU that was marginally faster than last gen's dual GPU solution. This means that the 6970 will most likely be in the ballpark of +/-5% of the 5970 performance. Now before we start the bitch slapping, there is nothing bad with it being as fast as the 5970, if it uses less power, produces less heat, is shorter and most importantly cheaper than it. And from what I've seen so far it will deliver exactly that.

Hey i expect 16 times more power than the 5970 from amd and 18 times more power than the 480 from nvidia

Seriously though 5970 power in a single chip with less power/heat and cost would be awesome.

A forum poster at Chinese forums ZOL has leaked pictures of what is purported to be the reference design of AMD's Cayman XT - Radeon HD 6970. At first glance, the card looks much like a longer and heftier version of the reference HD 6870. The similar boxy design is retained, and the "Batmobile" HD 5000 design is abandoned. Not surprisingly, the HD 6970 is a very long card, approximately 11 inches long, in the same ballpark as the outgoing HD 5870 and the upcoming GTX 580. A massive blower-type fan is visible, larger in diameter than the HD 5870's reference fan. This reflects NVIDIA's decision to use a bigger fan for the GTX 580.

Yeah I agree this card looks like a monster. I was considering staying with my 2x6870's for the duration of the year (Until the 7000 series releases) But now seeing this and if the benches are as good as they claim they might be. It looks like 3 of these might be in my near future

Yeah, nuts and eighteen feet long. I seriously can't imagine a dual Cayman XT card. All I can think of is global warming, quad slot cooling and swiss bank accounts.

My 5850 has 8 + 6 Seeing as supposidly these things are sposed to run hot, thats a very small farty fan...... perhaps they don't!

Hahaha, nice! Yeah, I think I'd have to cut out the hdd bay of my midtower to even get close to fitting that thing!

I think we're looking somewhere between 10.5" to 12" in length based on a rough estimate. The PCI-E slot on a motherboard is roughly 4 inches in length.

I know where you are coming from and I cannot disagree with your comments however, in essence you are saying that graphics cards are 10 times more powerful today but they don't draw 10 times the power or produce 10 times the heat, yes you are right and noone can argue that, and whilst my points were specifically aimed at the top end cards, think of it this way then, if a GTX460 draws x amount of power for x amount of performance, how does the 480 perform in relation to that and we see that the GTX 460 1GB on average performs per watt 30% better than the 480..... my origional point was, and I may not have put it across well, that IMO manufacturers should be doing better than that.

Just so as not to cloud the issue and pick on the now very boring fermi power and heat comments (which strangely enuff I don't subscribe to), if we take a look at the HD5970 in relation to the 5870 then in this case AMD do manage better, the 5870 wins the performance per watt by 15%, and this may well be the benefits of a dual GPU top end card..... maybe in the future thats the way everyone will go, if only on the principle that perhaps NVidia would have saved a lot of development time and money if they had not bothered trying to get the numbers out of a 480 and then moving on to a 580, but simply waited for the 460 to arrive and then throw out a dual GPU 460...... I dunno.

Personally, I would be a hypocrite if I were to denounce high consumption cards as I have owned and enjoyed the use of a GX2 and the 4870x2, both of which evidence your point very well!

Ok I see what you're saying and yes I did miss you meant like GTX 460 --> GTX 480 but I have to agree to that. Though I kind of wonder if it maybe related to the ability of software. Kind of like how 3Dfx SLI gave you 100% scaling every time just because you could move to a higher resolution, up the detail, etc. Just a thought.

gotta remember the gf104 if pretty damn cheap to manufacture and with the 460's not using all of the core, yields must be through the roof. but I suspect both sides could drop prices, it's just a matter of what they can get and right now people are paying it, even despite the econ.

If I'm not wrong, Nvidia bought a whole lot of wafers. Buy more wafers = bulk discount. Of course it is obvious that they don't make as much money per wafer as the competition due to the chips size.

It's not bigger, it's about the same size. 331 mm^2 vs 334mm^2.

my reference Asus 5850 was 6+6 and was one of my favourite cards ever. ever ever.

if you remember I had a 5870+5850 in CFX, and I sold the 5870 and just kept the Asus 5850 it was that good. fantastic bios/oc's on it, not to mention fantastic card anyway, and one of the best colour schemes, carbon fibre

do you have 6800's? from all the reviews I've seen they perform as-good-as-on-par with their 5800 counterpart.
