I have budget of £150 for a new card. Maybe a little more if it worth the performance gain.
I'll be getting it by the end of this week. Any recommendation is appriciated.:D

Depends what you want out of the card mate,
For me, I'd have the GTX470 as I could use with it Adobe Premiere etc.
But, for gaming I'd go for the 6870 mainly for the Eyefinity. If you want more than 2 monitors, 6870 all the way.

I'm more focussed on gaming but only on a single screen. I occasionnally encode some video but it's really no big deal.
Here's the problem, which one of the two is better in terms of power consumption and noise?
I always get the impression that nVidia card will be louder and hotter in general.

HD 6870 if you can get it for $240-$250.

Not impressed with any GF100 based card, so wouldn't touch a GTX 470.

I think you'll need to spend a little more than £150 for either of those 2 cards...

I have the 6870 and it is a very nice card for eye candy. Run's BFBC2 great, which is my favorite game. BO also, playing the SP maxed at 1080p.

On a second thought though. Would getting GTX 460 (1GB version) and overclock worth it?
They do clocks pretty well from what I hear.

@WarEagleAU
Yeah, I would probably go with the 500 series if I had the money. I'm really impressed with the new GTX performance on Hardware Tesselation.

Im a fan of 460s but if your not worried about PHYSX or 3D and your budget can stretch it go for the 6870. Nice cards they are.

For £150 that would be more focused at GTX 460 Graphics Cards rather than the 470s and the two 460 cards to buy with £150 or a bit more would be these two gigabyte cards:

For £150 you can get this card which gives great performance for it's size and it is better than most of the 460s with 3600Mhz memory clock, including ones that are more expensive:
Gigabyte GeForce GTX 460 OC 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card

For £30 over the £150 budget you could get this graphics card which is the successor to the previous card and this would be the best 460 with 4000MHz memory clock for having other higher specifications such as it's 1630MHz Shader Clock in comparison to Asus's DirectCU TOP 460 which only has 1550MHz Shader Clock:
Gigabyte GeForce GTX 460 SUPER OC 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card

That second card that fusionblu suggested is the definitive GTX 460. Its quiet, even when excessively overclocked keeps really cool and also at ebuyer they have it for just £158.99!!!! Plus you get Hawx 2 chucked in free.

Thanks fusionblu for the info and LifeOnMars for ebuyer link.
One question, how significant of an upgrade (GTX460 Super OC) will this be from GTX280?

Thanks

One question, how significant of an upgrade (GTX460 Super OC) will this be from GTX280?

Thanks

To be honest it is hard to say how significant the upgrade will be as it depends on what you are going to use the graphics card for, but it should be better at playing newer games as it supports DirectX 11 and it does have superior specifications such as the memory being GDDR5 instead of GDDR3, a memory clock which is more than 3x the amount of the 280 being at 4000MHz where the 280 is at 1105MHz and also that the 460 does have a higher Core Clock and Shader Clock specifications too.

The real improvement along with the specifications would have to come from the build quality such as the high quality components as well as the twin fan GPU cooler which keeps the SUPER OC Graphics Card at cool temperatures at quiet noise levels (some find they hardly even hear the fans).

The specifications alone pretty much shows this is a much faster graphics card than the 280, although in my opinion I would say the real power would come from having two of these in 2-way SLI like I have for the OC predecessor model of this graphics card (but truth be told that's just having a graphics card set up which should last for 2 or 3 years of gaming until the next upgrade, of course this set up would obviously be more powerful than just a single card and two of these should be able to beat a single 470, 480 and maybe a 580 while possibly being more energy efficient too).

If you was to ask me for a downside of this card, it would be that it cannot be put in 3-way SLI.

But the problem is that my PSU is only 700W. I don't think it will do SLI without having to upgrade PSU as well.

I decided I will save up a little more for HD 6870 because TBH I don't really need fancy stuff like CUDA and PhysX nVidia is offering. This is what I'm looking at.

I understand, although with that path I would recommend waiting for the next Cayman GPU based graphics cards to come out which would be the 6950 and 6970 graphics cards which might turn out to be better option for you than the current 6000 series graphics cards such as the one you gave a link to assuming you are going to build up a higher budget.

It is a sweet card. I want to get a little faster ram and a six core processor next : )
Maybe they will come out with an Athlon X6. My Athlon X4 doesn't have L3 cache, but it
doesn't seem to need it.
