Okay ... I bought me and the Mrs. a new LCD TV and I was thinking of getting a gaming console so we could play games together.

What console system has the most co-op/head-to-head games? Please remember that me and Mrs. Kreij are old farts and are not going to be playing shooters, and the goofy dancing games are out of the question.

I just want some opinions on people's experience with the consoles (as I have never owned one) and what they think might be a good fit for us.

DO NOT turn my thread into a flaming, threadcrapping console war thread or I will make it my mission to ensure you regret that you did so for all of eternity.

Thanks guys and gals.

Any games that both of you like, just to give an example?

We've never played games together so I am not sure.
I like just about anything and she likes to play an occasional adventure game (the search and click kind.. like Myst) on her laptop. Two player board games would be okay.
Preferably something where she won't kick my ass every time. :D

I'm a PS3 fan purely for the flexibility. Blu-Ray playback, streaming, and since you're not a shooter fan there's really no exclusive titles you'll be missing out on. That plus free online play if you find games like that helps since you won't have to pay out of pocket for a subscription you use rarely.

It's simple enough that my 5 year old son can use it (He loves Pain and Little Big Planet) and my wife likes it for streaming music and playing movies and such.

You might want to pick up the Wii, I think you guys (or old farts) will enjoy it more than either Xbox 360 or PS3. But between the two, I would pick up the PS3 because it comes with a bluray player (something which goes very well with TV) and also Little Big Planet. Uncharted (2) is good too, but its a bit more action. Personal preference, btw.

I'd go w/ a wii as well. It's definitely a party and "community" system as opposed to the blatant lack of co-op stuff in the other 2 systems. Though it pains me greatly to not recommend a ps3...

We have a BD player so that is not a factor with the system.

Grab a 360 then. The back catalogue of games is huge (and most games can be found very cheaply). You wont enjoy the Wii because they look total shite on nice modern LCD TVs ;) Plus, you could always grab Kinect for some controller free fun. Women usually love this because most cant find their way around a control pad lol.

I personally would go for the PS3. But from what you describe, I think the Wii may be rather more suited to you (i.e the sorts of games that are out for it).

Well Kreij, if you need a console, I can cut you a heck of a deal on a black (used twice) Xbox 360 Elite. I can even deliver it to you or we could meet halfway or something.

This. If multi-media playback isnt needed, a nice cheap Elite will do the job ;)

The Wii has a selection of co op games, time waster titles then some proper games like Mario Galaxy or New Super Mario Bros; has a few multiplatform titles too. Mario Kart is another decent co op game, most of the first party Nintendo titles are good and if you look hard enough there are some other titles that are decent.

Okay graphics arnt shit hot but they are decent and i get the idea your not in it for that

PS3 and 360 have games like Fable, Gears, God of War and GT5 not really the type of thing you queried about. The only really co op titles on PS3 and 360 are shooters and racers which is more head to head than co op, online multiplayer but that isnt couch co op either.

EDIT: Kinect has a barebones library of titles and move support isnt there yet, wait till these are more settled before you buy one of these add ons, they kinda remind me of like the MEGA CD ect

i'd go with the 360,simply because you said you dont wanna be jumping around and thats exactly what the wii requires. If at a later date you are feeling young again grab Kinect

You dont need to jump around with a wii you can couch game with the wii mote, just you have to move your arms more than a regular controller but its all done in the wii mote rather than like kinect where its the whole body.

I think it comes down to game selection rather than extra features because your not interested in that.

But he wants one that looks good on an LCD TV, the Wii does not :(

That sounds very reasonable, Erocker, and I think after reading these posts an Elite may be the way to go.

Here's the deal ...
You deliver it personally and stay for a few days to show us how to use it.
I supply food, beverages and lodging, ATV riding, shooting and ammo, and if you want I take the boat out for fishing (it's getting a little cold though). PM if you're interested and for more details.

From what I know the Wii is pretty crappy resolution is it not? We have a 55" 1080 LCD TV

I'm sporting a 46" samsung 3d tv and while the graphics aren't blu ray they aren't 8 bit nes either. Just get a 10 dollar set of component cables so you can at least get 480p out of it. If you want to be able to play together I honestly feel that the wii is what you want. Though ps3 and 360 do have a few actual co-op games they are not as common as the wii's

Maybe my impression of the Wii is wrong.
Our couch is a recliner at both ends. We will be sitting on the couch playing, not clearing out the living room so we have room to dance around. While I understand the advantages of getting more exercise while playing games, after working all day and then cutting firewood and all the rest of what I have to do, I want to be a couch potato.
So I guess I am looking for a couch potato console. lol

Yeah you really don't have to move around all that much w/ the wii either. The exaggeration levels with that are on par w/ people's reaction to fermi's heat output and energy usage. As long as you're willing to move your wrist and occasionally your elbow as opposed to just your thumb, then you will not mind the wii.

I heard E is cutting you a deal with an Xbox360. Perhaps this thread have outlived its usefulness?

Wii is probably going to be the best option of non shooter co-op games. Xbox 360 is king of the co-op shooters. If you go with the 360, then definitely get Trine as a co-op game.
