Does no one else just say " It's an avatar" when people look at you funny?

Or the classic " Hey, atleast I'm not on two girls one cup!"

fair enough cad thats you in your aspect, not everyone is as censored, i was just pointing out i agree with panther and the reason why

Sure. On a whole I agree with him too. I personally have a very disturbing story about my childhood that relates to how I have formed these opinions, but I am also, like I said, not protective of my kids...I am proactive. My kids are not sheltered from this stuff, but thier consumption of it I highly regulate.

You did bring up a good point about the advertizing...however you won't find such ads in public places here in Edmonton. There is actually very few billboards, period, here.

I mean, I don't care what other people do. It's not my place to judge. However, if what you do infringes on what is considered socially acceptable, then yeah, I'm going to say something. I do happen to live in a very "posh" neighbourhood, where many things are quite objectionable. If your yard is a mess, you are gonna get a fine. Many of the other parents in the community share my own opinions, so together, as a community, we decide what is acceptable, or not.

Normalist thing ever, if kids arnt pretending to shoot each other their pretending to hack each other to crap with swords  Or pretending to be tigers! RAWR!

True enough. I personally have my kids focus that energy on other things...like books, musical instruments, etc...and thanks...you've just clearly highlighted how things like this can have an influence on younger ones.

I am home, 24/7, with my kids, so have the time to really parent them. I do have 4 kids, after all, and planned each of them. It's not like I'm saying one tihng here, and doing another...I really do practice what I preach.

believe it or not, what people consider safe for work actually is not. at least in the U.S. and i know we are not talking about laws and regulations on this topic, but it does play a role in reality. in the U.S in a workplace if you were to have TPU up and there was an avatar of a woman in a bikini and a coworker saw it and was offended she could sue the employer for sexual harassment. it is just something to keep in the back of your mind while you consider what to post and how WHAT you post affects the entire community.

Yeah. important one, that one. Would suck to have to go to jail or pay a fine for someone else's avatar.

well not jailed, but probably be put on leave without pay through the trial. so you could lose your job. that is punishment enough.

Sexual harrasment, here, is a very serious offense. Job loss is just the beginning. You could get like 15 years in jail. It's considered a breach of the charter of human rights and freedoms.

You must be single.

At the moment, but I have had long term relationships, but ex girlfriend was an adult too so had no problems with me looking at pictures on the internet ;)

Cad I was actually trying to highlight how these things don't make a difference to kids, it's part of the normal development cycle to have playfights and thing's like that.

If you completely took away outside media kids would just wrestle each other.

( Look at puppies or kittens, they constantly fight each other, it helps mental and phsycal development, the same applies to our kids)

Sorry if I've misunderstood you entirely.

OOOooo, Canada is so progessive :respect:  :toast:

LoL. We are dressed up in multiple layers of clothes most of the year. Kinda hard to be progressive with that.

Most employers don't even allow skirts above the knee, etc, for fear of sexual harrasment charges..it's not just the ladies that can be affected, either. It's a big issue for employers here, as all responsibility is placed on them.

Sure, we all have very basic animal instincts. However, knowing the limits, and educating kids on those limits, is the role of a parent. I didn't mis-understand one bit. My point was that same need for social competition can be redirected to other places, because, as you say, the animal instinct is hard to control for little ones. That's why I stay home, instead of working. When my kids are in school full time , I'm not gonna be sitting on my ass doing nothing..I'm either re-starting my business, or going back to school. I am ONLY home, to parent my kids, because such things like you mention, are a reality.

Response appreciated. My point was that I am an adult too, a 36-year-old one as a matter of fact. And there is no ring on my finger. That said, my gf would throw a fit if I was looking at porn or nudie pics instead of, uh, looking at hers and as such it's kind of hard to argue with her or get upset. And that is to say absolutely nothing of her four-year-old son being the messenger. Ouch.

The solution to this is quite simple.
You guys keep your sigs and avatars in line and under the wire, or you get a request to change it.
One request.
If you don't comply it gets changed for you.
If you change it back or choose another that is unacceptable you start getting infractions.
Enough infractions and you become just a guest here at TPU.

We mods are good with that philosophy.

Okey dokey? :)

@ douglatins - thanks for the sig quote.

I for one am not bothered by any sig/avatar boobs/ass but I guess I can see how some people could be. I think my sig is borderline but you have to look closely to make out what it actually is.

I'd probably be the guy that has his changed for him.. cause im a dick.

Ahh well that's more a person to person thing really.

I'm quite transparent when it comes to being me, so obviously the only women that get in relationships with me already fully understand how I am : ] ( Logical/scientific /slightly emotionally withdrawn etc lol/perverse)

(I'd let them look at pictures on the internet too of course!)

It's called respect for others. The whole "I like it, so deal with it" attitude doesn't fly, for example, in Easy Rhino's example of workplace sexual harrasment.

I'm not saying you are wrong, merely explaining how it is possible you could be.

There is the option to turn off avatars and sigs here, so you do have a very valid point.

You've hit on a good point, and this is where good parenting comes in; as soon as my kids start fighting eachother, they're going to be put into boxing/Shotokan (my family's favourite martial art) or a breakdancing or acting group or something similar.
Something to stimulate them physically but to also satisfy their needs for competition and aggression-venting (Everyone in my Dad's bloodline all through history has had problems with aggression if not shown how to deal with it at an early age - they're all boxers and martial arts teachers - even my little brother is training heavily for UFC but I'm just a hate-filled bastard  )
It is definately 100% normal to playfight, I can vouch for that!

Why is it these types of threads always turn into a parenting battle?

You know, if you really have that big of an issue with it though then the smartest thing to do is just turn off the avatars and sigs so you don't see that stuff at work. Are we really having this discussion while we have "Reviews" of Computex Booth_Babes_2010 by W1zz no less?

Because it's the little ones most affected by this stuff. I personally can handle seeing images of just about anything. My kids, however, cannot.

I am a HUGE MMA fan...good thing it plays at night when my kids are asleep. I love seeing a nose get broken really good.

I don't see it as a battle though(the parenting discussion)...everyone is different. Those differences are the spice of life, so to speak. To me, it's no differnt than runnign a benchmark..we all get different results, because of how we built the system. And like a pc, there's no emotion in any of this...it's actually quite interesting to me.

I'd really be a jerk if I thought my way was the only way...but I know that those that frequent the teamspeak know me well enough now to know that's not the case...I'm only a half-jerk.

Like Cad said.

Children are the future, we don't inherit the earth from our ancestors but borrow it from out children etc etc

So it's bound to be one of those things people discuss a lot and with great passion : ]

My grandma died quite a while ago, but what a great lady she was...

One of the many bits of wisdom she imparted to me was in regards to naked ladies-- they were common. Public nudity in the 20's was normal and widespread. It wasn't a big deal for a younger person to see an older person naked because it was common in theater and art and it wasn't always in a sexual context.

That all changed with McCarthyism and it hasn't been the same since...

It's a crazy world we live in where nudity is shunned and violence gets you closer to god. Just my two pence.

Beertintedgoggles - Sir, you have quite expertly hit the nail on the head. Why I can't press the "thanks" button multiple times is beyond me.

Chances are your employer probably wouldn't be too happy you are surfing TPU's forums during work anyway.:D

And if you're surfing at work and really are concerned, turn off avatars and sigs and surf carefree, thats what I would do if I didn't own the business and actually cared about being fired.

Now as for a general rule of thumb, I say anything that would be acceptable on a public non-nude beach is fair game. Anything obviously sexual or pornographic shouldn't be allowed.

Hmm wonder how will mine be judged. :)

On more serious side. Yeah i agree with the OP on the subject. I tend to avoid these avatars because i am trying to be considerate of others.
