The HD 6970 is a great price, much cheaper than the 580. AMD has already won in Price/Performance. Can't wait for the newer drivers that should easily scrape another 20% increase in performance.:D

Except that GTX570 is cheaper and just as fast.

In most games the HD6970 comes close to the GTX580. It beats the GTX570 in Call Of Duty 4, Crysis, DiRT 2, F1, Riddick, Clear Sky, UT3 in Wizz's review.

Two HD6950s beat two GTX570s.
So if two HD6970s beat two GTX580s it will be pure win as it will be about $300 cheaper to get two HD6970s than two GTX580s .

Read the conclusion page at [H]OCP's review. It explains everything what i want to say in this post.

... thank you AMD for the huge disappointment, as expected nVidia took AMD by surprise with both the GTX 580 & the GTX 570 which as much as I hate to admit it; is a very clever move ...

... Now I'm definitely going to get the GTX 580 and since unfortunately there is no hope for any price drop until the 6990 comes out, added to the facts that I'm tired of waiting and that I'm not willing to buy a dual chip GPU, I'm going to order it immediately ...

Not in UK.

570 is £270-330
6950 is £220-250

so £50 cheaper at lower value, £80 at higher value.

Yeah and in nearly all of those games the HD5870 beats the GTX480/570 too. Neither the HD5870 nor HD6970 are faster than GTX480 and GTX580 respectively, sadly, as W1zzard's average results show.

Heck in many of those games the HD5870 is faster than the 6970. The thing is that except Crysis, nearly all of those games are using very old engines. Even the ones that are sold as DX11 titles are not really DX11 titles.

Not in UK.

570 is £270-330
6950 is £220-250

HD6950 isn't a match for the GTX570*, the HD6970 is. What is the price of those?

* With the crappy OC capabilities that they've shown in all reviews, not even overclocked can a 6950 dream of beating a GTX570.

2560 res it's 5% behind. Not worth the 20% price diff.

Can't dream of beating a 570 when overclocked?

I appreciate though the 570 will overclock better - just watch the language you use as it can be misleading. You did say it couldnt dream of beating a 570.

Anyway, i'm leaving this thread to go and buy as cheap a 580 i can find ro an MSI lightning 480.

One game? Are you going to make a point based on 1 game? A game with 5 year old engine? A game in which HD5870 is faster? A game in which a HD5870 is as fast as a GTX580?

REALLY???

Oh then, if you are seriously saying me that, then I have no choice but to accept you are right... NO.

I'll concede that the HD6950 is a much better deal than the HD6970 and GTX570, but then again a HD6870 is a much much better deal and at least here, a GTX460 is an even better deal. You will always find a lower priced card that is a better deal, because well, that's how prices work: 75% the price for 90% the performance or similar. In that regards Nvidia is in a substantially better position for the rest of the year, something that I would have never expected after the mild dissapointment of GF110 being just fixed GF100. And GTX560 can potentially destroy the HD6950 and any hope for AMD to make big profits if they decide to go into price war. 25% smaller die and similar performance, while priced not much higher than the GTX460 if really required. Barts while being slower wins that battle, because it's smaller, but at what price point. If a price battle begins Barts would need to be priced very very low (which means very low profits) battling the cut down GF114 or whatever is called (GTX550?) in almost mainstream price point, while the GTX560 battles against the much more expensive to manufacture HD6950. Seems a lot of trouble for AMD, while Nvidia will always have the GTX580 and GTX595 on top to increase profits. It's like GTX2xx vs RV770 for the rest of the year, except that GTX2xx were 580mm^2 and RV770 was 256mm^2 and now it's 400 vs 530.

Sigh... a little disappointing with the performance level of these cards. In Some games...my 6870's in single mode come with in 8% to 13% (If not closer) of a 6970 Depending on the review you read. My 6870's come even closer to the 6950....With just losing to it by only a couple FPS in a lot of games.

Granted this is all on early drivers... so I expect the gap to widen. But still in terms of performance not the best gains in the world that's for sure.

But on the other hand.... with a 6950 selling for $299 @ New Egg I could easily see these cards selling like gang busters!!! Even the 6970 is attractively priced for around $350. If those prices stay.... I can smell a possible repeat of the 4870 and a super deal for everyone!!!

Still in the end.... all I can say is YAY FOR NEW CARDS TO PLAY WITH!!!!:)

Disappointed after the hype, but the original estimates that they'd top the 5800s by 20% seem just about dead accurate.
That being said... I'm drooling for a US$300 6950! I gotta get it... somehow!
I must ask though, can you run Eyefinity3 using 2xDVI + 1xHDMI, or does it still have to be 2xDVI + 1xDP, like in the 5000 series?

You still need to use one of the display ports with an adapter but active DP to DVI adapters are less than $30

Awesome bang for the buck. Lesser power consumption that the GTX 580 and crossfire scaling is awesome. It beats GTX 580 SLI in some games even though a GTX 580 SLI setup costs $1060 ($530*2) while a HD6970 CF setup costs $740 ($370*2) which is a difference of $320! Yes the card might not be the fastest single GPU card and be a GTX 580 killer, but it still has its "UPs."

If you want a GTX 580 killer, you'll just have to wait for the HD6990 my friend. ;)

Idiots. How is 30FPS considered playable? It really isn't...especially in F1 2010.

Metro 2033, OK, it's palyable...but my god, not for long.

I think maybe Kyle's eyes are a bit tired and old..and maybe not as accurate as they used to once be.

Maybe I should toss up some gameplay vids so you can see what he considers playable..really isn't.

Based on power consumption, I expect another 10% performance from drivers, if not a wee bit more. the question simply remains ...How long will it take AMD to extract that extra performance?

Actually anything sustained above 24 frames should be tv quality video and should play smoothly. We all would like to see higher but 30 frames is definately playable and should run smooth.

I'm quite happy with how the cards turned out and I can't wait to pick up a 6970 to replace my aging GTX280. Gonna give it to my girlfriend to replace her 8800GTX.

They aren't bad at all but not really all that much reason to upgrade if you have a good overclocking 5870. Really non of the new generation cards are game changers both the 5800 series gtx 400 series cards are just about as good.

Because it's the same frame rate you get on your tv for the most part and at the cinema, for 90% of people not juttery = playable.
