Everytime I get shot at Battlefield 2 ...its always the fault of a laggy video card!

its not even a card. :/
and try using a lower resolution and settings :/
ATI 4200 is not good. and isnt it just 512MB max shared?? i guess it would perform better if you could get some 1200MHz memory!

So to answer your question, it varies depending on my budget, how well the games i play are running and whether or not i break something :p

I'll change my card when I notice the frame rates of a game I want to play are not high enough for me to enjoy it.

But I will always do my research on what performance other people are getting in the game.

Don't want to be buying a card when it is not necessary and I probably won't be buying one anytime soon unless I plan on upgrading my monitor.

Nah man. I'm getting two 6970s. If the 6990 is good, i'll sell off the 6970s and get a 6990 or later get another one or two 6970s for 3 or 4 way CFX action. :p But that's only if it can't run Crysis 2 :p :D After selling off my 5970 4gb cards, i have enough money to buy 4 6970s :p

The intervals between upgrades aren't constant for me. By the time it's necessary to upgrade the GPU, I usually just build a new computer. I figure I'll get a new card when I get back into gaming or build a home theater pc, whichever comes first. That'll translate into about two years' time since my last GPU purchase.

It's been getting progressively worse.

I suffered a Nvidia FX5500 from 2002 till 2007 (!!)

Then I got a Nvidia 8600GTS 256MB in May 2007 which lasted me till November 2008 when I got a Nvidia 8800GT. Then April (?) 2010 I got the ATI 5970.

Whenever the game I just bought doesn't run. :p

I used the venerable ATI 9700 PRO from when I bought it all the way until 2008 (!), and then it's been a progression of your average mid-range shit since then.

Why did you drop Nvidia arroyo?

I'm not ATI fanboy or nothing like that. I loved my Geforce 256. But when I was changing my computer the only reasonable alernative for ATI Radeon 9600 PRO was Nvidia 5600. Geforce 5600 and 5600 Ultra sucks!

Then came era of SM 3.0 and I was not able to play Chaos Theory or any UT3 engine game. So I needed to get better card. Nvidia cards (6600 and 6800 series) had DirectX 9.0c and ATI ones (x700-x850) didn't have it. The choice was simple --> 6800LE@6800GT.

Computing power of my 6800LE@6800GT in end of 2007 was to weak for any game I wanted to play. There was time to change. I was afraid of power consumption of HD2900 and price of GF 8800GT ... then 3850 and 3870 came. First reviews shows that this two cards are at the same performance as 8800GTS 640MB but with lower price. I was wrong. I bought 3850 and two weeks later I've changed it to 3870. Two bad decisions in one month. It was not a bad card, but all my friends who bought 8800GT was happy and I was sad. 8800GT was like 50% more powerfull than 3870.

Then HD4850 came with price less than 8800GTS and more power than 3870X2. It was like a redemption from HD3870. This card overclocks like a nothing before and gives best price/performance/watt/anything ratio in history. I loved it.

Now I have dillema. I sold my HD4850 and right after christmas I will buy new card. Prices in Poland are totally different from the ones you know from Newegg. HD6850 is like 20% more expensive from GTX460 1GB and HD 6950 is more expensive than GTX570. I just don't know which one to choose. I like ATI for silent cooling, image quality and power usage and I like nVidia for their drivers and overclockability.

I have to agree with arroyo on the HD4850.
Mine is still kicking.
Although it froze in DiRT2 twice recently thinking it was the 10.11's only two find out to of my AC RAM sinks had fallen off due to the summer heat.
Who knows how long they had been off.....

I've had nothing but trouble with the pre-applied adhesive on the cooling modules which came with my AC Twin Turbo.
I expect the rest of the heatsinks which I have not replaced the thermal tape on to fall off this summer as well.

I change whenever the price/performance increase is justifiable for my budget... so probalily every 1.5-2yrs. Thats the period of time where we see the biggest gains for he best value imo

I change graphics cards like underware.

I have used 2 different 9800GTX+'s today and took those out and put in my new GTX 580 just alittle while ago.

Also have a GTX 480 thats water cooled just hanging out the side while i do bench marks on the other cards.

I need help.
