Which Photoshop?

Which photoshop is the best? And what are the differences between them, which one is the most user friendly ... Are there any differences from the free GIMP, to the ones you have to pay for?

I use photoshop CS (which is Photoshop 8)

in my opinion it is the best of them, having used version 6 and 7 and finding them to be graphically ugly. CS is alot easier to work your way around, a has lots of extra features as well as what i call 'noob features' to appeal to the newbie-comers to photoshop.

All in all, Photoshop 8 is extremely versatile, and i dont see any valuable features in the newer versions of photoshop that make them worth the extra money.

As for other programs, your going to have to wait for the opinion of others as i am totally lax in this area, as i am TOTALLY satisfied with this program.

download Photoshop CS3 beta, and have a play with that for a while. At least you won't have to pay for it

Using Photoshop over Illustrator has absolutely NOTHING to do with output quality
I wrote a long reason why this was, but my friends net is gay and I lost the post, but in simplest terms, using Illustrator compared to PS has nothing to do with how an image is printed

I use PaintShop Pro 9.x & it suits me fine... I never learned to use Adobe Photoshop & it really gains MOST of its power from what I understand, from plugins for it.

Doing development? The MOST I really do is minor edits to image resource files I build into apps, OR resizings of images... perhaps ONCE in a while, I do an image cut & it is really EASY to do in PSP, because the program does it perfectly, 'regions' (color switch borders) are perfectly done for PRECISE cuts!

* In other words, lol, nothing TOO technically difficult!

i use photoshop CS2 9.0 and i think its the best one of all of them, although i havent tried cs3 beta, i didnt even no it was out lol.

Photoshop elements is a completely different product line.

Elements 4 is based off of PS7, Elements 5 is Based off CS2.

Its Photoshop, with the advanced features cut out and sold for a much more reasonable price.

CS2 ftw!

I've found GIMP to be EXCELLENT!

Havent messed with paintshop pro tho.

CS3 is a 2 day beta unless you have a valid CS2 key.
